Hello everyone. I just joined today and it's great to be a member with so many knowledgeable people. I am a little worried about my new budgie.

My wife and I today bought ourselves a new wee budgie. This is our first ever budgie so we are extremely new to this. We picked him out of a lot of budgies and got him loads of cool stuff. Everything he needs to be happy in our home. So we get his cadge set up and get him out his little box and into his new home. We noticed when he was sitting up on his perch that he has a little round crusty donut type thing on the corner of his right eye lid. He is appropriately 11 weeks old and he is an albino. His name is Dexter and he seems fine. Not really doing much but that's expected as he's been a little stressed with moving house. Can anyone help us with what this might be? I can also post pictures if that would help.

Thanks everyone

More pics of our wee Dexter.

What a handsome fellow! If I were you, I would take Dexter to an avian vet to have it checked out. It looks concerning to me (but I have no medical training whatsoever.) Does it seem to bother him?

He's just great! It doesn't bother him at all! The place we got him told us to take him back and they would replace him. But we wanted to keep him and give him a fighting chance. I called the vet today and they said give him 24 hours to settle in. He still hasn't had any water or feed yet. But he's starting to make the odd chirp now. Hope he's ok :/

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your new budgie!
Your Dexter has a rather advanced stage of scaly face mites, not only his eye is affected but also the beak/cere and the feet.
You do well in taking him to the vet, surely an Ivermectin based treatment will be prescribed. After the first treatment (he will probably need multiple treatments) you will need to wash and disinfect the whole cage and accessories and this includes perches, food and water containers, toys, etc. This is done in order to prevent a re-infestation from the mites.

I hope your budgie will soon be mite free, good luck with everything.

Dexter is a lovely looking bird.

aluz's suggestions about treatment are spot on. My budgie Jimmy also had SFM when I bought him and I can assure you that follow the great advice on this forum, you'll soon have a perfectly healthy and lovely bird.

He is a handsome fellow, and I agree with Aluz, he has scaley face mites and a trip to the vet to treat that, and get an overall wellness check, and establish a baseline record and working relationship with a good avian vet would be wise....

Oh our poor wee budgie. So how is it that the vet treats it? Do we have to take him to the vets or can the vets give us the treatment? Might be a silly question but I'm just new will he be in pain?

It's really simple to treat. It's a spot on treatment, like a little drop of liquid on their skin and that's it. The vet should treat him easily enough.
You have to do the cleaning so make sure you clean everything like aluz said. If he has out of cage time, clean wherever he perches too.
At first, it may not look a lot different, but within a few weeks you'll see an amazing difference.

fI this helps, this post details my Jimmy's treatment of mites. he also had a bashed uo beak from a night fright he had... poor boy.
