SnowHedgehog will become famous soon enough
Default Oh The Hormones :\

Hello!

Lately Bridgette has been particularly hormonal and mean towards Popsicle (both females) and I'm starting to worry they might hurt each other.

Popsicle isn't in breeding condition right now and wants nothing to do with Bridg's "attacks", where they're literally throwing each other to the floor of the cage and whenever Bridg is out she's always looking for somewhere dark to hide, mostly in the folds of my curtains, and has started shredding any paper she can get her claws on. Her cere has also gone quite light tan the past few days where it was a dark brown and "breeding condition crusty" before.

When she first started sharing a cage with Popsicle she was a resource guarder and wouldn't let Pop get anywhere near the food, fruit, treats, etc. That has since been dealt with (turns out adding a second food cup was all the reassurance she needed) but has returned to guarding with these hormonal episodes.

So now I'm wondering what to do, should I put her in her own cage and limit her daylight until she's past her crazy stage? Is there anything else that can help? Anything that can calm her? Should I move her to a different room as well as a different cage?

*SIDE NOTE*
I know hens tend to get quite noisy when it comes to hormones but Bridg has always been a very very vocal female so I see no change in this. I adopted her in February when she was found as a stray and never claimed so I'm not sure of her past but I THINK she was ignored by her previous owners and then released out of annoyance which is why her flock calls are so strong, but then again I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's great that you have been keeping a close eye on your budgie girls' interactions and are able to read well and decipher their behaviours.
From your description, it would be beneficial for both your girls to be separated until Bridgette's temperament is under control.
By placing Bridgette into a different cage and if possible for the first few days in a different room, she will be thrown off the breeding mood/condition much faster. When you let her out, keep on discouraging her urge get into the dark hiding areas.

Once her cere reverts to the creamy white colour, you can reintroduce her to Popsicle by allowing them to have supervised out of cage time together and depending on their behaviours you can then decide to let them share a cage or not.

3 out of my current 4 female budgies are also very vocal and love to sing and this is regardless of whether they are in breeding condition or not.

Good luck with everything, I hope soon your Bridgette's mood will improve for the better.

Thank you Aluz (and Faery)!!

I cleaned one of my backup cages and Bridgette is now residing in there until peace has returned I also moved her into a different room, she seems a little wary but she's been in that cage before so hopefully it won't take her too long to adjust.

Neither seem too happy with me but what are you gonna do, it's in their best interest

Thank you guys again, you rock <3

Very sound advice Aluz, and had I responded sooner, would have expressed my agreement greatly. I'm glad you followed her advice and separated your girls. Great job!

I agree, I'm so glad it's working out so far and I bet both little ones will benefit from some "alone time"
