Default Is it easy to tame a 4 month old budgie?

Hi there!

So since I'm finishing high-school in a week I've been looking for a friend for Ducky. (I even have the cage set-up )

I'm a little worried though because I need the new budgie to be male so that there's minimal fighting. Anyway, I found a super adorable budgie for sale (he's without a doubt male) along with some younger budgies. I asked how old he was and she said he was only 4 months old.

Do you think it's possible to tame a budgie at this age? I've only ever attempted to tame babies. I was thinking of using my L02 vision cage as an L01 to make it a little easier.

Hi Georgia!

It's perfectly possible to tame a 4 month old budgie, at this age they are still fairly young. Generally speaking, they are easier to tame before reaching 6 months of age and even older or adult budgies can reach a decent level of tameness if we take the necessary time to work with them.
How fast a budgie makes progress with taming and bonding with us will ultimately depend on their personalities and reception to us during our daily interactions and training.

Yes! You can definitely tame this new youngun You can even tame most adults with enough patience, give him a few days to settle in and begin slowly just as you did with Ducky!
You can even use your already tamed budgie to help with training the new one! If Ducky is confident with your hand, the new guy should feel much more comfortable with it

The more pictures you post of him on talk budgies, the tamer he'll get...

Just kidding of course, but I do agree with everyone else, he is still young and should respond well to your taming/bonding effort's...

I agree completely, I'm sure Duckie would love a new friend and I hope to meet him soon!

Thanks for the replies! I'm pretty confident now that i'm going to be able to tame a new, slightly older budgie. especially with 5 months of holidays...

I've decided I'll wait just a little longer until I've finished all of my exams. I have a friend who's trying to find a new home for some of her budgies (for various reasons), so I'll probably end up with one of hers. There's this beautiful 3-4 month old olive-green male that i've had my eyes on for a while! So exciting!

That's very exciting, Georgia!

We'll be looking forward to seeing pictures when you have Duckie's new friend home and all settled in.

I got a one year old from a bird place here in town, She's never been handled as far as they know, she's been there for a while, and it only took me about 20 minutes to get her to start stepping up on my hand.

I'd say it has more to do with a birds personality, than it does with their age. A great way to see personality is to put your hand in the cage, and see what they do. If a bird goes stir crazy and jumps all over the cage, they are going to be harder to tame than a bird who just runs away from you. And if a bird doesn't move at all, stay away from it, because more than likely it's sick, or petrified with fright. You want a budgie who isn't too excited.

But it really does go to personality, more than anything else.

You should be able to easily tame it! At four months they probably haven't gone through there first molt yet, and will be easier than if they are even a little bit older. (I'm attempting to train two eight month olds... Which will be very difficult) good luck!

P.S. Don't forget to follow the taming prodecure! It's slow, but it works.
