Default Never trust your cat and a budgie!

Our dearly beloved that chose my wife as her keeper from a Petland on Vancouver Island, was finally mauled by our (whom I thought until yesterday) fairly well behaved 15 year old declawed female cat.

We dismissed Meka's (our cat) infrequent chop-licking and punished her mildly for displaying such emotions after having our female 'Keet for over two years. My wife noticed over the last few days that Meka and (Soda was her name) had started to become visibly and audibly jealous of our attention to each other. Yesterday evening, we came home to find Soda on the carpet missing tail feathers and two tooth puncture wounds near her rear and right side. Her tail feathers were about 4 feet from where she usually perches, her little body (I'm tearing up) about five feet from the perch, concluding that Meka had probably tried to nab her from the perch and sustained immediate traumatizing wounds, inducing an immediate cardiac arrest. Her little wings were sprawled out as though she died mid-flight. It took a year and a bit of owning Soda (not a "hand reared pet store Budgie" by any means) to get her to hop on our fingers. Only within the last few months has she been able to fly to our shoulders in trust. She would mimick our kissy sounds and even mimicked my wife coughing when she was sick last month.
So no matter how well behaved you think your cat is towards these lovely little feathered beasts...........THINK AGAIN!!!!!
I can't punish my cat more than I already have ( a very tight scruff of the neck nose rubbing of her protest against our little Soda) because cats can only remember long term trauma and immediate misbehaviour within a few minutes. So ultimately, it's our fault for letting little Soda have free reign of the apartment unsupervised while we were away.

I am so very sorry for your loss of little Soda..I am also sorry that this happened in a tragic way... I see so members on the form who have cats and trust them with there birds and then something happens to them...

While i have a budgie i won't have a cat ... If you own birds, cats are out of the question!!!! I am not keen on cats cause of there nature to hunt birds..

If you do get another budgie to love or any bird please either keep your cat in another part of the house away from your birds... We know you have a lot of love for your animals and your budgie.. We no that you loved Soda..
This is good advice for members on the form NEVER TRUST A CAT NO MATTER WHAT.

All i can say is that i am so sorry that this has happened... Poor little Soda You have to forgive yourself.. We know that you have learned a valued lesson...Try not to be to hard on yourself...... But it is not good taking it out on the cat as the cat doesn't know what it has done wrong....

Oh, my love
my darling
I've hungered for your touch
a long lonely time
and time goes by so slowly
and time can do so much
are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
Godspeed your love to me

Lonely rivers flow to the sea,
to the sea
to the open arms of the sea
lonely rivers sigh 'wait for me, wait for me'
I'll be coming home wait for me

Oh, my love
my darling
I've hungered for your touch
a long lonely time
and time goes by so slowly
and time can do so much
are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
Godspeed your love to me

Despite the upsetting circumstances, welcome to the forums

Obviously you've learned this lesson the hard way and I know you are feeling very guilty, but try just to learn from it and don't blame yourself. Meka was much loved and I know she will be missed greatly.

I'm sorry for your loss

Rest in peace and fly high, little Soda.

Sorry for the loss of your bird.

Please try not to hold the anger onto your cat because just as your bird wanted to fly, a cat's natural instinct was to catch a bird. It seems as though cats are cruel, but this is not the case. A cat will never be an animal that is easy to keep with a bird.

So if you decide to not keep a budgie while you have your cat, just dote on your cat instead. She/he is deserving of love too and maybe get a bird at a better time in your life.

I hope you feel better in time with the loss.

Sadly this type of accident continues to happen, we as humans tend to place trust in our instincts and think we know our animals. All animals have inbuilt actions, hunt or prey attitude. It is in their make-up.
You have learned a sad lesson , unfortunately your sweet Soda has not survived this encounter, remember her with love and perhaps in the future you may find another to bring into your home. Forgive yourself and learn from this. Fly high and free sweet girl you are with our Angel flock now.

This is indeed a very sad situation and one that all members with cats and dogs need to take to heart.
I'm sorry you've gone through this terrible experience, it's hard to learn lessons in such a painful manner.

Although you are angry with your cat, birds are natural prey for cats and I know you recognize she was only behaving institutionally - as a cat does.
Love your cat as you always have and forgive her as well as forgiving yourself.
I'm very sorry for your loss of little Soda.

Fly high, soar free sweet little Soda; rest peacefully darling girl.
It is because of Love we Grieve
and
Because of Love we are also comforted
in our Sorrow

In Memories, may you find Healing
In Time, may you find Peace
In the Power of Love, may you find Comfort.

*********************************

To all who read this post
PLEASE REMEMBER
No matter how well you think you know your pet
it only takes a moment for your "well-behaved" cat or dog to kill a budgie

Don't become yet another bereaved owner lamenting the error of believing "it would all be fine".

I'm very sorry for the loss of your beloved Soda. She met a tragic fate which claimed her life and I can only imagine how devastating it must be for you. You placed too much confidence and trust in your animals' relationship which was a blunder on your part. The cat has acted in its natural instincts....therefore please try to forgive her and don't be angry anymore than you have already been.
May SODA's soul REST IN PEACE.
