Default Untamed

Hello. I've had my budgie for a year done everything that
I can to tame her followed all the guides and videos, positive reinforcement, ect. I haven't made much process. I would like to let her out but she has full flight last time I let her out she flew into the ceiling which made me super nervous and upset. I was thinking of getting her wings clipped but I can't bring myself to do it. Is it super crule of me to do so? I would hate to make her sad.

Personally, I would not have her wings clipped.

Budgies generally fly into things the first couple of times they are allowed out of the cage because they have to learn the room's dimensions.

Once they know the dimensions they can navigate quickly and easily without running into anything.

I have untamed fully flighted birds that enjoy out-of-cage time each day.

Do you have a small room you can bird-proof?

You can cover any windows or mirrors with towels or a sheet to help prevent crashes. If you are really concerned she will hit the walls then tape up some netting or sheets a few inches out from the wall so if she does hit, that will slow her down.

Mine two are not that tame either. They are both about a year old. When we moved to a new house I put masking tape up in squares on the large windows in their room for five days and that seemed to do the trick. I only lock mine in their cage at night as Caleb has had the odd night terror so he is safest in a closed cage. The rest of the time I let them free all day. I have budgie secured this new place so I don't have to worry leaving them out, they won't get hurt.

But in the old flat they each flew in to each of the two windows once. And then they never did that again. They didn't appear to get hurt, perhaps it only hurt them a little bit.

I agree with the above, my little girl gave me heart attacks with the way she flew at first (she's what you'd call a "reckless flyer" ) but now even though she still flies wayyy to close to tall vases and banks around corners like she's being chase by wolverines, she knows what she's doing now, after a while.

I'm happy knowing that she's figured out the lay of the land and can maneuver like she was always meant to if she were in the wild.
