Default Leg bands

I got my budgie, Rio, from our local Petco. I felt comfortable buying there because the birds had a large clean cage with all the necessities and more. The girl that cared for them was very knowledgeable as well. When we got Rio she had a leg band which I didn't give much thought to at the time. But after doing some reading I became obsessed with having it removed because of the potential danger. My local avian vet removed it. What is the point of having leg bands on budgies that are sold in pet stores?

The point of a leg band is for identification purposes.

If you have a pet budgie with a closed plastic leg band, it is usually safe and does not need to be removed. The bands that can cause the most problems are open metal bands which may catch on a toy, perch or what have you.

You write down the numbers on the band just in case the budgie ever escapes.
Then when you contact local vets, shelters and post notices about your missing bird, you include the leg-band numbers so anyone who finds the bird can identify it as being yours.

Our petco uses them to let the store know that the birds came from them and if you should need to return the bird that it came from that store
