Default New, terrified budgie keeps getting out when changing food.

ok, so Alfie has flew out the cage twice today while changing food & water. Because he isn't tame i've have to chase him around the room for about 10 minutes trying to catch him. This is stressing me out a bit, as he hasn't eaten or drank any water yet since I've had him. I was really hoping he'd eat/drink something today, however i think this has just ruined it - i'm worried he'll starve!

Am I just overreacting? Is there something I can do to stop him from getting out or to calm him down a bit? I do have a vision cage so I'm a little confused as to how he managed to slip past my arm when i only had one of the doors open... Maybe if I have his wings clipped? although something tells me that'll just stress him out way more at this point in time.

Please don't trim Alfie's wings that will stress him out even more....I am growing Inidi's wings back...You should have little doors for the seed and water can you cover your hand over the door while taking out the seed dish or water dish.... Or do you open the main door to get his food out... When I first got my budgie I lifted the seed dish up with the door and then the door of the cage slid down quick so my bird couldn't get out... But someone else may have a better solution for you...

Thank you for the advice! I've decided to move the food bowls to the bottom of the cage (he seems to go down there a lot anyway) so then I can open the little doors. I think I was overreacting, he doesn't seem too distressed. He's terrified of my hand, but that's to be expected I guess. He's eaten some millet now, but I've been watching him closely and haven't seem him touch either his water or seed dishes. Hopefully he'll drink something tonight!

To get your budgie use to your hand you could place some millet in your hand and slowly put your hand in the cage and when he gets use to it they usually hop on to get the millet. You can do this every day so he gets use to your hand....Where you said you put the seed did you place the seed in the little doors of the cage Indis seed dish is in both sides of the little doors and i have a perch placed in front of the seed dishes and he goes down there when he wants to... I hope everything goes well for you..

Placing the food and water on the bottom of the cage is a good idea at present, budgies do not need a lot of water, they do not like really cold water either. With him escaping it is not good ,chances are he could injure himself or actually escape from the house.
Work on bonding and getting him used to you, don't be tempted to rush the process, slow and steady.

Yay, success!!! Alfie ate out of the bowls on the floor of the cage this morning & is now eating from the other bowls. He didn't eat much, but it's a start. I'm fairly certain i even caught him drinking water last night!

Also, he's been a lot more calm with my hand going in the cage, so no escaping today. such a relief! I'll work on bonding once he's more relaxed & chirpy - he still seems a bit tense. Thank you both for your help.

Sounds like he will start settling down now. It takes a little time...

I'm glad he's settling in! I'm sure once he's more comfortable he'll be a great little friend
