Default An Experience with Jake.

I do like the Hagen Vision cage for quarantine cages but not for the first time I have had a budgie escaping incident with it.

Jake is in his quarantine room and I was cleaning his cage out. Because you have to lift the cage to off the bottom to change the paper, my little fella managed to escape his cage.
Now, I have a couple of budgie proof rooms, so it's not a big deal, but I did want to let Jake settle a little more.
Having said that, he has settled down a lot quicker than Skye did.

But here I have my new budgie, out for the first time.
I left him to explore the room and stayed watching him. After a little time, it was time to go back in but he was stubborn about jumping back into the cage.
I really don't like to grab a budgie if I can help it, so I decided 'what the heck, I'll try and get him to step on to my hand to get him in'.

And it only worked!
I spoke softly and calmly too him as I held my hand out to him, moving slowly and he stepped onto my hand. I was able to get him close to the cage and he jumped onto the top of the cage.
I managed to get him on again and he did go to the top of the cage or perched elsewhere for a little while (including my arm once). But eventually, he came onto my hand and allowed me to put him in his cage.

I was so pleased I was able to make it stress free as possible for him.
It's not like I think he has bonded to me, but yay!

That sounds pretty awesome Therm, and a great indicator the little fellow may be mustering a little trust of you. Your patience
has and will continue to pay off...

Wow!
GREAT job. I'm so impressed Jake was willing to step up and allowed you to coax him to return to his cage.

Jake!!

That's wonderful! Jake clearly already has some trust in you as he allowed you to return him to his cage, safe and sound Now that he knows that a) nothing bad will happen to him when he comes out and b) you're nothing to be afraid of, I think his trust will have increased that much more

That's great that he trusted you enough to step onto your hand. And you got him in without having to grab him - doubly awesome!

He's a sweet little guy so it's easy to be patient with him.

Jake!!
Me too! I always randomly try and convince the budgies to step up when they're out if I need them to go back in and I've never had one do it like that! Clearly, Jake is just awesome.

I hope so. It's nice when you realise they are trusting you. The others in the flock are a lot more used to me now. They're a lot more easy going and have visited me and I think Skye helped that process along. Hopefully Jake won't lose his trust when he meets Skye.

He did get a treat for being such a brave bird. I know! They're tiny little babies and we put our giant hands out to them and want them to just jump on and feel safe!!!
My niece is terrified of birds and I have to keep reminding her how tiny they are and how afraid!
