Default This is why I can't go to the pet store.

I was buying a new filter for my fish tank, and of course this little budgie was just sitting by itself staring at me. It was covered in poop all over. I had the workers get him out so I could look at him. He was really sweet and let me hold him. XD So I took him home...

I gave him a bath to get the poo off, and it looks like he's got some bald spots. The edge of his wings appear to either have a bald patch on each side, or maybe just from the water? But the belly looks like a dark spot (bald spot?) that I didn't see until it got wet. Is this really bad? What would cause this?

Also, it's probably not easy to tell, but does this look like a male or female? I have no idea how to tell for albinos.

I believe this is a little girl, but others can correct me if I'm wrong. Make sure you quarantine her before adding her in with the rest of your birds. At LEAST 6 weeks. And try and get her to the vet for an initial exam. Not sure what the dark spot is on her chest. Can you get a better picture of the spot? She should definitely be seen by a vet before you add her to your existing birds, though. Just to be safe.

She's a beautiful little girl, congratulations!

It sounds like she was in very poor condition, and the bald spots to me indicate she was bullied, plucked, and even severely injured by the others. There are no visible pin feathers so I doubt there are bald spots from a moult. From here, that appears to be a blood clot, can you tell any different?

Even so, she seems to be doing well now, and other than being rather scruffy I'm sure she'll do just fine.

She probably needs some time to settle down after the shock of being picked on and then brought home by you, and be sure she eats or drinks something within the next day if she hasn't already.

After quarantine (minimum of 45 days), you can try introducing her to your current budgie, although if she really was bullied as badly as it seems, she may not react as favourably as one may expect.

Finally, keep an eye on her vent to be sure it's not pasting over with poop. This happens sometimes because of stress, or it could be because she's ill.

Keep us updated on her condition and I'm glad she's found a loving home with you!

She has her own cage away from the other birds for now. She's all dry now and it looks like the bald spots are gone. It may have just been the water pushing some feathers aside The belly spot is invisible when she's dry. Hopefully it was just a shadow from pushed aside feathers. I'll have to wait until my day off for the vet, but she is looking much better now.

I'm glad she's preened herself back into good condition, it's a positive sign she seems to have energy to maintain her feathers.

She looks like a very friendly little girl--have you decided on a name for her?

Also, it's great you're taking her to the vet soon. A qualified avian vet will be a big help in identifying and treating any injuries and illnesses she may have sustained.

I'm gonna have to second everything StarlingWings just said, lol. She looks sooooo much better now. I'm glad you have her in QT, and are taking her to the vet when you have time. She is gorgeous, and it's much better seen now that she's all preened up and looking pretty.

Have you decided on a name yet?

I would name her Nieva, Artemis, or Fawn

Here's a list of names that may be helpful--they're sorted by colour and gender

Awww, what a darling little budgie!

She is very fortunate to have found you to give her a safe and loving home and all the care she deserves.

I would name her Einin (Prounounced A-neen) which means "little bird" in Irish
