Default Need help with cleaning!

Hey everybirdie! So I would love to clean my carpets, but to hand scrub them is going to be painful, and well, tedious. Lonny was wondering about a carpet shampooer, and so I looked it up, and can't really find anything that pertains to actually cleaning the carpet.

Can I use a carpet shampooer in my house with my flock? I don't want to use anything harmful to them, so the typical soaps are out, and vinegar too if the thing heats up. I just want to avoid scrubbing the whole house by hand. I have spot cleaned a few spots, but it hurts my knees, and is very tedious to do it that way.

So yay or nay on the shampooer?

Hmm, that's a good question. As I'm sure you're aware, even "safe" cleaning products contain tons of yucky carcinogens and whatnot. You could try going to a health food store as they sell lots of eco-friendly cleaning products that are made of natural ingredients. You might also be able to make your own carpet shampoo from a recipe online.

You could also checkout bird-specific cleaners and see if they have any concentrates that could work. Something like Poop-Off, maybe? You could try the Pet Focus concentrate, but I'm not sure how well it would get stains out... It would definitely kill any pathogens living in your carpet, though! I have the Pet Focus concentrate, and I feel comfortable using it (the diluted mix I do up) in their cage while they're still in it. Heck, I trust it more than the vinegar I used to use to clean their cage!

Actually, I'd probably just clean the carpets with the Pet Focus, let them dry, then maybe do them again, but with regular water with a few drops of lemon extract? I love the smell of lemon oil. I use NOW lemon extract.

Thanks Robyn! I'll have to check for that stuff around here. The problem is where I'm at we don't really get a whole lot of "bird safe" stuff. We have things that claim to be bird safe, but you know how that goes...

Anyone else have anything they can suggest while I find out about Pet Focus?

Kristen,

I've had a carpet cleaning service come in to do my carpets in the past.
I simply put the birds' cages in the bathroom and block under the door with a towel.
The solution the company I use has no odor whatsoever and is done with a professional industrial steam cleaner.

If you don't want to go that route, you can buy or rent a carpet cleaner and use a baking soda/water mixture to clean your carpets.
However, the carpet cleaners made for personal home use don't get the carpets as clean as when they are done by a cleaning service.

You could also use
F10S Veterinary Disinfectant F10S Veterinary Disinfectant
diluted properly with a home carpet cleaner.

I shampoo my son's rug all the time out of necessity. My birds are fine but they are always in another room when I do the shampooing. I think removing them from the area would be simplest solution.

If you do try to use cleaner not meant for carpets please test on a piece of rug you don't care about just to make sure it isn't going to leave residue or affect color fastness.
