Default The Ultimate Bird Room

Okay, so the free-flight room in the basement for the budgies is almost finished. The drywall's up, the popcorn ceiling was scraped off, and we've primed and painted it. Anywas, I guess these posts I'll be doing will be a sort of "how-to" for those interested in making their kids a room.

It's 12'x7'x8' (LxDxH). We've used all bird-safe materials. For the paint and primer, we used Mythic. It's zero-VOC and doesn't contain any carcinogens or other yucky toxins. We wanted to use Green Planet Paints, but there's this issue going on between the Canadian supplier and the company, so Mythic Paint it was!

If you guys are thinking of making a bird room, the only paint brands I'd trust are Green Planet Paints (all natural, no chemicals, soy-resin, gets its colour from minerals, and safe enough to drink), ECOs, and Mythic. You'll either have to order those paints online or drive a few hours to get the paints listed above, HOWEVER, they cost only a little more than your run of the mill paints. With these paints, you don't have to worry about any heavy metals, carcinogens, gases, or other dangers found in other paints. These paints have almost no smell to them at all, so you aren't going to feel ill while painting. But seriously, these paints are SUPER safe. No VOCs, carcinogens, zinc, etc. I checked their MSDSs, and they are totally safe.

Anyways, the walls are yellow and the ceiling is blue. I honestly don't feel like describing exactly what the colours look like since I'll be posting pictures once the room is finished. Anyways, I wanted to go with happy, energizing colours, but I didn't want them to be overly stimulating. I'm quite pleased with the colours I chose.

I made sure only bird-safe materials were used, so no MDF or plywood was used. They contain tons of carcinogens and VOCs, and are soaked in really toxic urea formaldehyde, which constantly off-gases cancer causing fumes.

For the flooring, we got Marmoleum. It's basically the only safe flooring on the market. Everything else is made of dangerous chemicals which off-gas for years. Seriously, look up how nasty flooring is. No wonder dogs and cats suffer from cancer and neurological problems!

Anyways, Marmoleum is made out of raw, natural materials, is cured in a giant greenhouse, and is finished with linseed oil. It's made of 97% recycled materials or something. I don't really remember, but it is the most non-toxic, environmentally friendly thing I have ever seen in my life. It has zero-VOCs, no carcinogens, and is just obsolutely amazing. It is also available in a large variety of colours. However, you can't just go down to your local Home Depot and expect to find some. You'll need to go online and see what suppliers are within a four-hour drive of you. It is also EXPENSIVE and needs to be installed by someone who specializes in Marmoleum installation. The sheet we bought is the size of the new room, so we're just laying it down on top of the cement floor and won't other gluing it down.

Despite its downfalls, Marmoleum is definitely the way to go when it comes to birds.

Oh, there's two big viewing windows we're installing in the room, and a double-door. We bought them UV lights and a regular fluorescent T8 to light the room.

I have three eucalyptus seedlings and over a dozen bottlebrush seedlings growing at the moment. I'll be keeping two of the eucalyptus in Air-Pots to put in the room once they're nice and big, and I'll plant another eucalyptus in the front yard. The eucalyptus are snow gums, so they can actually be grown in Ontario. I'll have a couple of bottlebrush in Air-Pots in the new room once they've matured. The rest we'll have in hanging planters outside during the summer. Man, you have no idea has slowly Australian plants grow! They should speed up once they get their lead stems, though.

I've also made some things for the free-flight room. I made a double-decker hoop swing thing, a multi-branch rope perch, a climbing net, and some other goodies. I used this completely natural cotton rope and stainless steel wire to make the multi-branch perch for them. Attached a few plastic ties, wrapped the ends with vet wrap, and it was good to go! I also got a PVC thing to attach it to the stainless steel mesh we'll be installing in the room.

It's going to be great! I bought a baby camera for the room the you can tilt and rotate. It has night vision and I've programmed it to send alerts during the night if the budgies have a night fright. I also bought a Drinkwell Platinum fountain for them to use as a bath. We're going to be using apple branches for perches, and we're going to make them a few flagstone platform perches.

I also bought them a few other platform perches with bark on them. They're a good size, and the one's a cork bark perch with a hole in it that's perfect for hiding shredders and treats. Oh! I'm also putting a climbing wall in for them! I bought some shapes from Things for Wings made of natural wood, and I'm going to attach them to the wall with stainless steel screws. I also want to order some large, bamboo pole slices to use as resting places. You know those bubble shelves? Well, they'd be like that.

I'm also going to grow trays of grass that I'll put in as a fun foraging treat. Ziggy loves eating the grass seeds off of fresh grass I give them.

I can't wait for it to be done! I'll try to takes some good pictures, but our camera makes everything look dark and red. I spent over half an hour trying to adjust it, but the image quality didn't improve that much.

Wonderful post! Look forward to the final product.

Thanks for going into detail about the products you used. I had no idea the flooring would be such an issue!
