B.J.

B.J is my first baby bird ever all of my other birds have been adults when i got them. So i have a few questions that i see in him i have not seen in my other birds.
1.B.J. likes to squeeze between the side of the cage and the food bowls.is this normal for them to do? I'm afraid he will get stuck and die.
2.he likes to kick his seed out of his covered food dish.how can i stop him?
3. He tries to do flips between his legs. He will spread his legs and try to flip his body in between them can he brake a leg doing this?
I've had him just 5 days. So i know he is still settling in. He is larning fast that when i cover his cage at night to get on his perch and go to sleep.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...ab66d6a201.jpghe sleep on the perch in the pic.its close to the bottom of the cage.he will fly to this perch sometimes but not a lot.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...289092ad2c.jpgi know birds like to be uph high but not him.he likes to be low is that because he is still young?can i start giving him pellets? All my other birds eat pellets.they eat roudybush i have the nibbles for the budgies is this to hard for his to eat yet? Hes about 7-8 weeks i think.

Hi Linda!

It sounds like B.J is settling in well!

He's behaving perfectly normal for a baby budgie ;) Babies tend to like to wedge themselves in small spaces because it reminds them of their nestbox they used to sleep in. They love digging around in food dishes for the same reason--small, enclosed spaces make them feel safe.

He'll grow out of doing both those things, though, not to worry. If you don't like him tossing out his seed all the time, you can get him a different type of feeder for now that doesn't allow him to get completely in, such as a ceramic crock like this:

Or a silo like this:

It's funny that he tries to do flips! :giggle: He's just clowning around, I doubt he could break anything in this manner, so don't worry.

Also, as he gets older and more independent, he'll enjoy going up to the top of the cage more. As babies, budgies aren't too comfortable venturing up too high just yet

Best of luck with darling B.J! Keep us posted on how he's doing :D

All of BJ's behaviors you are describing are normal for a young budgie. ;)

A budgie only needs 1 1/2 - 2 teaspoons of seed per day. If you measure the seed out instead of filling his seed cup that will help prevent the seed being kicked all over.

You also might want to try putting his newspaper on top of the bottom grate and spread his ration of seeds on the newspaper so he can forage for them. That's how I give my budgies their seed each day.

BJ can have pellets in his cage 24/7 and you can start introducing him to sprouts and vegetables as well. :)

He certainly is a cute little fellow! Since he's doing flips already he may be planning to try out for Cirque du Soleil :giggle:

I gave B.J. some egg today but i don't think he ate any.will keep trying. I also gave him back the hamster dishes back for now he didn't kick much seed out.
