Smile My New Budgie "Sunny"

Hello my fellow budgie lovers, I just wanted to take a minute and share my story. As a child we had a few Budgies, "Guacamole' and "Zoe". I have always had very fond memories of them riding around the house on my shoulder and the sweet noises that they made. I have 3 kids of my own now and decided recently that it was time for another. I looked all over for a breeder in my area to no avail, so I went to the pet store to roll the dice. I watched the males and females for a few minutes before deciding on my precious "Sunny". She seemed to have a calm(not TOO calm though) and curious demeanor so when the pet store employee asked, I pointed to her. I had read a book before the purchase that said not to take the bird out of the cage until at least 8 days. Also, I had read many bad stories of hard to tame pet store birds. The first night I was already handling her ( my previous bird experience came right back to me). By the third night she was riding around comfortably on my should, even preening my hair and giving me kisses. It still has been less than a week but I could not be more in love with my new girl "Sunny". Having her makes me even more excited to get up in the morning and more excited to come home from work. I just wanted to write this to encourage others that you can find a good one at a pet store!

What a cute little girl your Sunny is! I'm always to happy to hear of others who end up with good experience from getting a budgie from a petshop - my own little hen is also from a petshop and is now super tame. Are your kids getting used to Sunny as well?

Hi and welcome to the forums !! Sunny sounds like a lovely bird, i'm sure she is very happy to have you.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I did the reading after I bought my 2 budgies from the petshop and I started regreting my decision after reading several stories from other people (not on this forum) on how hard it is to tame 2 budgies at once and that buying a budgie from a petshop is a bad idea.
But it turned out to be fine and I've bonded with them pretty quickly, the only problem I have with them is that Richie sometimes doesn't want to enter his cage but I've discovered a trick that works everytime. Both of my budgies are very fascinated by my phone's screen so I turn it on and they imediately come and perch on my finger...they get so caught up watching all the lights and icons move on the screen that they don't even realise that they're back in their cage .

Hi! to Talk Budgies

It's wonderful you've had such an amazing experience with Sunny.

Independent pet stores that work directly with one or two breeders that follow responsible and ethical breeding practices often have budgies that are healthier and more receptive to human socialization than those purchased from the "big-box" pet stores that support the birdie-mills.

I want to assure the members of the forum that we have nothing against the budgies that come from pet-stores.
What this forum stresses is that birdie-mills are not reputable organizations and care more about profit than the health and well-being of their birds and the offspring.

Sunny sounds like a delightful little girl and we will be looking forward to hearing about her antics and seeing lots more pictures of her in the days to come.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

Hi there and to the forums!

Sunny is a very cute little girl and it sounds like she's really developed s special connection with you!

With the right amount of time and patience, any budgie from a pet store can be just as rewarding a pet as one from a breeder, I agree! My own little girl is also from a pet store and she is extremely tame

I agree with Deb, however, although certainly budgies from pet stores are lovely little things, their purchase inadvertently promotes the birdie mills that they come from. Of course, we have nothing against pet store budgies at all, to the contrary, but the reason to discourage buying from a pet store is not because of temperament, although they can be harder to tame, but because of where they come from.

I'm so glad you adopted Sunny--she surely will be very happy with a loving and caring owner like you

We look forward to seeing more of her soon!

In the meantime, be sure to look through all the threads provided by Deborah If you have any questions afterwards, please do ask as we'd love to help!

Hope to see you and darling Sunny around the forums and we're so glad you're here!
