Budgies don't eat meat. I feed my budgies pellets, seed, and vegetables.

Yes, budgies can eat meat. However, they should have high-quality (organic, if you can) meat cooked completely through and at a safe temperature for them. Not right off the grill, if you will.

They should only have meat as an occasional treat. My vet recommends once every two weeks. This is because their livers are not designed to deal with proteins the same way as ours and too much protein can cause liver damage. The caloric content is also very high, and if your budgie is on an all-seed diet, you probably want to avoid too many extra calories. He did say that eggs are better than meat, but to be careful about over feeding.

Looking forward to seeing what the experts say on this topic.

Okay then, I'm not sure why you made a new thread asking about it if you've already read other threads on the topic. I personally don't think meat is a necessary part of a pet budgie's diet or particularly good to give them, other than maybe eggs. My birds do really well on their diet of pellets, seed, and veggies.

If you can't see, I asked what budgies like and what they doesn't like to eat. That's why I made this thread.

Budgies are not really supposed to eat meat, nor are they capable of digesting much of it.

It is true that meat will not hurt them, but you shouldn't give it to your budgie. High fat, protein, and other problems with it can negatively impact their health.

Budgies like to eat varied diets of vegetables, seeds, and pellets, as mentioned above. They can have fruits in moderation and enjoy things like "birdie bread" and things of that nature on occasion.

I hope that answers your question.

Yes, any type of meat product is non-essential and quite redundant for budgies and most small pet birds due to their more delicate digestive system. Meat may be a tasty and prime source of protein for humans and carnivores, but egg product can also provide the equivalent source of protein for your budgie.

I think its unanimous that we all think a budgie should not eat meat but if you feel it necessary contact your vet for further info on what kinds and proper portion size... i guess its like raising a child you do what you feel is right by you and your baby... do keep us updated and if you choose to feed him meat i pray all goes well

Whilst it is really not necessary to feed meat to budgies, it is not an unnatural thing for them to eat. Meat is animal protein and I think we all know that this is necessary at times - that is why we feed chicken egg. There are very few vegetables that contain all the amino acids that our birds need to live, soy I think is one of them. Soy is definitely not a natural food for budgies though! Without all the amino acids our birds cannot be strong and healthy, they cannot make the protein their bodies are made of unless all the amino acids are available. Chicken egg is an easy way to provide the animal protein they need, but again it is not something they would every eat in their natural state. However, they will eat insects and other dead budgies if they find them and feel the need. It is not uncommon for a budgie that is bleeding to be pecked at by others as they take the opportunity to get some animal sourced nutrients.

So, I don't think it is necessary to feed meat if your bird is getting egg regularly, but a totally vegetarian diet will need to have man made ingredients added to make it complete. I personally think it is better to find natural sources rather than rely on man made additives to keep budgies healthy.

Added: many show breeders feed different meat protein sources to ensure the babies can grow to their optimum. There seems to be agreement that too much protein will lead to the birds becoming over excited, even aggressive. So, if you choose to feed meat it should be small amounts at regular intervals, less than if you were feeding egg.
