Default Chronic egg layer or maybe not!

At the beginning of the new year my little girl, Rio, decided she wanted to lay eggs. She was not encouraged to do so and I did everything I could to discourage any further eggs. I have a large cage and a smaller cage and she decided the smaller cage was going to be her nest. When she would lay an egg I would remove it from her cage. She laid a total of three eggs and a month went by and she hadn't laid anymore eggs but was still attached to the smaller cage. Well after that month went past she laid another egg, I removed it but she proceeded to sit on the bottom of her cage as if she had eggs to sit on. Worried about her health, I consulted with an avian vet and was advised to purchase fake eggs before trying more drastic measures. I purchased the eggs off the internet. I have to say this was THE BEST thing I could have ever done for her, she believed they were her own. I was told that she would eventually get bored of sitting on the eggs and abandon them. She did sit on the eggs for about a month and half and she did abandon them and the smaller cage. I've left the fake eggs in the bottom of the cage and she hasn't laid anymore of her own eggs since. She is now back in the larger cage so I'm hopeful I've found a solution to her egg laying. I haven't read many posts with others having the same problem and felt the need to share, should someone else find themselves in the same situation as myself.

Hi Tammy!

I'm glad the fake eggs have been helpful!
Your Rio really seems to display the behaviours of a chronic egg layer and it's great this solution with the fake eggs has been working out well so far.
Still, it's best to continue to keep a close eye on Rio and to try to implement the measures to discourage brooding and another egg laying cycle from happening. Unfortunately, the fake eggs method is not 100% full proof and there may come a time where Rio will no longer be "fooled" by them.

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing. Makes me wonder who makes these "fake eggs" and sells them on the Internet? Can't be a very rewarding job money-wise...

Fake plastic eggs have been around for many, many years.
There are eggs of many different sizes and colours for the different species of pet birds.
These fake eggs can be purchased on pet stores and some big chain supermarkets also have them on stock. At least in my country they do.

I have seen fake eggs before as well, and I've never been looking to buy them but have seen fake chicken and canary eggs in pet shops.

I'm glad this has worked for Rio, but have you cut off access to the small cage now as well? If she feels like this is her nesting area, I'd want her to have no access to it.

I'm really glad the fake eggs worked for your little hen. I had a hen that really wanted to lay eggs.... we tried the fake eggs and she pushed them right out. I'm really glad you found the right solution for your hen... chronic egg laying issues can be soooo hard to change!
Congratulations on your success.

I agree with Therm -- it seems that removing the smaller cage since Rio seems to consider it to be a "nesting" area would be prudent.

I'm glad the fake eggs worked out well!
