Default What size to make a swing?

I want to make a swing for my future Budgies. Could someone please give me suggested length for the perch and should I use 1/2' dowel or 3/4" dowel? How many inches should I leave for head room? Thank you!

I'd use a 1/2". A dowel is fine for a swing, but a natural branch is even better keep in mind. You can buy them, usually with hardware attached at one end, but that could of course be removed. It doesn't 'have to be' exactly 1/2", but that's ideal for a swing. As a side note, natural branches in the cage should be of several sizes around there (larger and smaller) for foot exercise and health.

I wouldn't worry so much about the width or height of the sides being a bit on the spacious side. One of Mink's favorite swings which is also her "bed", is sized actually for a Cockatiel. Also depends if you want a 'one seater' or to fit multiples .

I live on 20 acres of Birch Trees. Would I peel off the bark, or leave it on? Do you think 5" of head room would be enough. I don't have my birds yet so I'm kind of clueless. Lol! I don't have anything to go by. I just wanted to have everything ready for them.

I measured the 3 swings here 1 is 6" height x 3 1/2".
2 or 3 1/2" circles.
I use dogwood for perches and I leave the bark on some it. I clean it with apple cider vinegar and bake it at 200 degrees for about 2 hours.

Be sure to post pictures when your done!!!

Great that you have the natural wood, and the birch would be fine. As stated above, just clean it and bake it.

5" headroom is plenty. The swing that my late Twigs (American budgie) slept on was actually a vertical hanging ladder with a beaded arch at the very top. He slept on the top rung and the arch is only 3". I was surprised because it looks so small, but he fit fine, head didn't even hit the top since the body position is on an angle, so they're really not that tall.

I agree with the consensus here, my boy sleeps as close to the top of the cage as possible. I think he likes knowing that there isn't anything behind him. I've seen some covered swings and am thinking about making one. 5" is plenty of room.

That's some great info, Julie, I may be using this thread for reference later! BTW, just noticed the new siggy. It's beautiful, and Twigs looking down to Mink is just precious!!!
