Default Thinking about getting more budgies!

Hi!

So, currently I have two female budgies, both approximately three years old. Up until about a year ago they lived harmoniously with a third female budgie, who unfortunately died from a tumor. They have always lived in a 30w x 18l x 18h flight cage, and I'm looking to upgrade to one that's twice as large (30w x 18l x 36h), which I understand is ample room for four budgies. Please correct me if I'm mistaken!

They're also allowed out of their cage for at least six hours every day.

My question is, would it be better to try to introduce two female budgies or two male ones? What issues might arise from either option?

Thanks!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

If you choose to get more budgies, please be sure to observe quarantine for the new budgies.

Quarantine means housing your new birds in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room where your current birds are housed for a period of 30-45 days.
Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks.
Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new birds in a completely different room.

It is also a good idea to always take a new budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a "well-birdie" check-up. This allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet and the vet can establish a baseline for your bird in case of any future illnesses or injuries.

Distinction between an Avian Vet and a Vet that "Will See Birds"

Anytime you add or subtract members of a flock the dynamics of the interactions are bound to change no matter what the gender.
Females don't always get along with other females as they tend to be more territorial and dominant. However, there is no guarantee that your females will get along with males either. It really depends on each individual bird's personality. You will need to be ready, able and prepared to house any new birds separately on a permanent basis if necessary.

If you add males to the current females, you are going to need to do everything necessary to discourage breeding.

Hi Kallie and to the forums!

I agree completely with Deborah and couldn't have put it better myself

There's a lot to consider when deciding to add more birds to an already harmonious flock. As mentioned, flock dynamics change, and even the birds' temperaments may change. Of course, it could be a good fit for your girls, too. It depends on what you're willing to do as well as how you think they'd react

Let us know what you decide!

In the meantime, be sure to read through all the links provided by Deborah. Feel free to ask if you have any questions afterwards!

Hope to see you and your girls around the forums!

Well, the cage I was looking at doubled in price overnight, so it looks like I'm going to be sticking with two for now. Thanks again, everyone!
