Default Getting two at once

Hi there,

I am looking for a little help just now.

Me and my wife had two budgies, cheeko and rocco. We were away on holiday last week and as usual left the budgies with my mum who also has two budgies. The four of them always got on fine following each other about the room etc.

Unfortunately cheeko passed away while we were away suddenly! She was bred as a show budgie but was only six years old. She had a good life of been let out every morning till we went to bed at night and having the house to herself with rocco.

I have decided to leave rocco with my mums two for now as I don't won't him being alone and he's getting on so well with the other two. Hes a bad flier as his claws are a little deformed and my mums house suits him much more than ours.

Now I am thinking in getting two babies at once now! I have had budgies since I was 9yrs old (in my thirties now) but we have always had one then got one later then got another once we lost one etc etc.

Will it still be possible to get two at once and get them finger trained and tame at the same time?? This is very important to me for obvious reasons and I realise with two together they won't talk but I am happy with that.

Thank you

Welcome to the forums!

You have my deepest sympathies over your Cheeko's passing...

To answer your question, it's possible to work on taming two budgies, but the process will likely be slower and can take longer since they will be housed on the same cage and chances are high they will naturally bond more closely to each other and as a result you will be put in second place.
Personality also plays an important role here when it comes to their general receptiveness when you interact with them. Depending on the situation, you can focus on the budgie who shows more promise and have one-on-one sessions with him/her. When there is a good bond formed, you can use this in order to more easily gain the trust of your other budgie and to solidify the bond.

Aluz's has offered great advice and I agree that if I were starting over with budgies, I'd probably get two at once as well. If you have the patience and dedication, I believe you will be successful in training two budgies and as Aluz suggested, maybe focus on one and let the bond you develop with one, help you create a starting place with the other.

Hi! to Talk Budgies

I agree that you can tame and bond with two but it will take longer and require more patience.
Taking each bird into a separate room for individual one on one time on a regular and consistent basis for training sessions will help.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm very sorry for your loss of Cheeko.
I think allowing Rocco to stay with your mum's birds where he is already comfortable and happy is a wise decision.

We'll be looking forward to seeing your two new budgies when you have them home and all settled in.

Best wishes!

That sounds like a great plan to me!

I'm sure the budgies would enjoy having a nice holiday at your house prior to your trip.

The answer by Aluz is correct. I found that to be what also happened to me when neighbors moving gave me their 2 budgies who were very close to each other for a gift. I never did get close to those birds.. I guess someone many have better luck than I had.
