Default I'm curious

When your budgie mimics something you have been saying to her/him, how do you let her/him know they are doing it right? What is the positive reinforcement you give to let them know?

I swear Bernice is saying "kiss kiss", whistling a cat call (which my husband does to her all the time), and making a smooching sound. I tend to say "YES" enthusiastically to her when she mimics us, so I'm thinking she will pick that up hahaha.

I never imagined she would talk, but I am excited she is trying to.

My budgie is talking too what a blessing she tries to mimic!!!! At first it sounds like mumbling, so may be not that clear, so I continue saying the same word over and over again until my budgie says it right, the way a human says it with a soft, clear voice (not too loud) or not too low and slowly. If you think you heard her saying it, you probably heard it right she is mimicing and you should stick with one word and keep repeating the same word until she says it clear. Because she will keep repeating it to herself until she makes the exact sound and tone you are making and eventually she will get it right. I suggest you teach her new words after she can say the word you are teaching correct, then move on to a different word, that way she can focus on one also whoever is teaching the word, she will try to say it with their voice.

Thank You! I think it is so cute to hear her try and find her voice, she chatters a lot before she naps, that is when I hear most of it. I hate to keep talking to her because I know she is getting ready to sleep, but it's hard not to when I hear her say things.

yeah, werid huh. my budgie always talks when he is about to sleep non-stop, i sometimes feel bad for him, he prevents himself from falling asleep, then i turn off the light, so he stops talking and have a rest. Best would be try to talk to her when she is not tired and not falling asleep. It would be easier for her to pick up words when she can focus better when she is well rested. Keep on repeating the word to her when she is rested, i know it is so cute when they talk cloud is my first talking budgie, I would never thought he would talk.

When my budgie says a phrase, I simply repeat the same phrase back to him as positive reinforcement.

"Says a phrase" !!! How cool! Did he pick up a phrase he hears you say a lot? Or did you teach it to him specifically?

So how old were everybodies budgies when they started to talk?

Just a couple weeks ago she started trilling and making all sorts of new fun sounds. I think she may be picking up a bit of chatter from the birdies outside as we have been able to open the windows for a bit of fresh air lately.

I usually say "Whatcha doing?" when I walk into the room so that was the first thing Skipper said.
That progressed to "Whatcha doin', Skipper/Scooter/Skipooter"
(He's the one that came up with Skipooter which I thought was adorable!)

"You're a good baby bird", "You're a good boy", "You're a cute baby bird, Scooter", "Where's Peachy?!" "Peep - Peep- Peep!", "Kisses!" etc.

Skipper is the only one of my three that talks and was around 3 months or so when he began.
