Default Toilet Paper for Budgies in 2016

Hi, being new to budgie care I was wondering if it is safe for my budgie to chew on toilet paper Roles (The cardboard bit). I have seen threads and posts from 6 years ago saying it was unsafe because of the adhesive. Being six years ago I was wondering if technology has improved enough to make the adhesive zinc free. Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forums!

From what I know, toilet paper and kitchen paper rolls are safe as long as there are no visible traces of glue left on the cardboard.
Also for hygienic and general health purposes, it's best to not offer a toilet paper roll which has been in the bathroom/toilet area.
The reason for this is pretty much self-explanatory (potential contamination from germs/bacteria, use of fragrance sprays in the bathroom, etc).

This matter came up recently in another thread on the forum.

I did more research into the matter and there is conflicting information regarding the safety of Cardboard Paper Towel and Toilet Paper Rolls due to the adhesive.

Some sources indicate the adhesive used to attach the first sheet of paper towel to the cardboard core contains zinc.

Allowing your pets to play with or tear up these rolls could result in zinc toxicosis.

One manufacturer states: "Although the core glue is safe for its intended use, it is not intended to be ingested. It is not food grade and does not meet indirect food contact regulations. Therefore, we cannot recommend that it be used with pets".

Zinc toxicity is very serious and can potentially kill a budgie.

The best we can do is research these matters as much as possible and then use the information to make an informed decision with regard to the safety.

I personally will not be allowing my birds to play with cardboard tubes as I'm just not willing to take the risk.

I agree completely, I also stay on the safe side and don't repurpose those

You can get untreated cardboard to make toys at many pet stores as well as online if that's something they enjoy shredding

Ok thanks for the answer though there isn't any visible glue. The only place i think there might be glue is where the cardboard is stuck together. The rolls have this spiral shape.https://dingo.care2.com/pictures/gree...paper-roll.jpg like this.

Interestingly, the glue isn't even the biggest problem with those, it's the actual chemicals in the cardboard that serve as anti-fungals, mold control, etc. For this reason, it's better not to use them
