Default Wing Clips

Hello again!

Preclude: The wing clip was her breeders choice and I, nor any of his clients, have had a say in this practice. Yes, they are unusually short. Yes, I plan on fully flighting her, especially with the cats and because I feel horrible that she can't fly and it seems cruel to me. However, I understand WHY my breeder did it as he hand raises and he finds crucial to the budgies safety that their wings are clipped.

This seems to be a popular topic as of late and I apologise for grabbing Sachem's post where their new budgies were mentioned. However, your post made me realise I might have missed something on Bluebell's underwing.

Day she came home:

Underwing tonight:

From what I've seen of budgie flight feather growth, her left wing is normal. However, her right doesn't appear to be growing, or if it is, slowly.

The following pics are her wings from the back and sides:

Like I said in my post in Budgie Health, she doesn't fly. Her flight has gotten significantly worse as her wings have grown out and she no longer lays her wings flat. From the first picture, it's evident why!

Have any of you had any experience with this before? It seems highly unusual. I know she's moulting, but the right wing hasn't appeared to grow at all and the avian vet, via phone, suggested we NOT reclip to make the wings even.

So, any experience would be great as she had ANOTHER crash landing tonight that was HARD. This happens a lot because she has ZERO flight control and it puts me on edge.

Thank you kind people for any help. You truly are an amazing community that I'm glad I've joined. The knowledge here is wonderful!

So sorry to hear & see more details of your wing clip worry. (By the way, I wasn't suggesting or thinking YOU did the wing clipping, and yes, it's quite understandable why the breeder does it...)

But the many experts here will be able to reply to you very soon and hopefully offer some good advice for the regrowth. Good luck!

Moulted flight feathers tend to grow in a bit unevenly sometimes, and trying to re-clip them to even them out isn't going to do much good in the long run

I wanted to let you know that the breeder should not have clipped her so short. A "safety clip" only clips a portion of the wing feathers so they are unable to fly but still can balance and use their wings for stability when hopping around. Generally, the best practice for baby clips is to do a safety clip, so I'm sorry the breeder wasn't aware of that

It sounds like she's already starting to have them grow back, in the meantime you can line her cage with an old towel at the bottom in case she falls while she learns to navigate effectively by climbing instead of flying.

Hopefully in no time she will be able to balance better and get a few of her flight feathers back!

Thank you so much StarlingWings! She is growing in her other side quite rapidly as I can see them coming through today well and she seems to have gotten a bit better at gliding.

My breeder really is a great person and he has been doing it 20 years and is quite brilliant in their care. Not doubting your expertise or anyone else's and not saying I agree with his methods completely, but I still feel the need to defend him as Bluebell is an incredible little nugget that I know wouldn't be nearly as tame/bonded with me/healthy sans her breeder. If my only complaint is her wing clips, I'll take that for a healthy and happy baby any day, so long as she doesn't hurt herself with them. But she's managed for two months almost with the clip and I think is going to struggle more once she CAN fly since she won't be used to it.

Sorry if I seem defensive or harsh. I love hearing your advice and opinions, everyone, and I greatly appreciate it.

Bonus Broccoli bath picture to say I'm sorry if I seemed rude. Thanks again!

I love the broccoli picture!

Wow that's a severe clip. I hope your birdy's feathers come in nice and she figures out how to use them!
