Thumbs up Budgie Care Essential?

I was reading FaeryBee's sticky on clips for spring loaded doors and thought for those of us who have doors that slide up, what can we use?

The breeder I bought Peta from told me of her budgie who actually lifted one of these doors and got out... She had heard a regular banging from the other room & when she investigated, found her budgie disappeared from his cage, the doors shut and the bird in her cockatiel's open cage, eating his food!

She put him back and watched. He did the same again by (somehow!) holding the door up while he got out . Since then she has always added poly bag ties to secure all doors.

I thought these were really fiddly, and ordinary wooden clothes pegs are much too flimsy. I didn't want to use anything plastic. Then I found some really "strong" pegs, exactly the same design as standard wooden ones but very smooth and tough, nicely made of bamboo. I bought a box of 25 from amazon and so discovered the best, most useful things I have around the cage.

They lock each door securely, neatly & quickly, including the sideways opening big one. They are exactly the right size to fit between the standard wires, whether used horizontally or vertically. They can also be used to hold, attach, hang, firm-up, shift along all sorts of cagey other things. Bamboo is budgie safe (and doesn't appear to attract Peta at all--perhaps because it is so smooth and hard?). They are Extremely Useful! and I wouldn't want to be without them. In fact could do with a few more...

Do you have a Thing? Let's hear about it and spread the word!!

Smile Budgie

My essential is my Birdy first aid kit. My special electrolyte /probiotics /millet
spray / sterile saline and bottled water. Then cornstarch to stop bleeding.
We use small stainless steel clips from IKEA area to hand things like pictures etc they are about an inch long. We keep our kit ready and nearby at all times.
As I type, it is 3' away on one side and our birds are on the other side. and just a few feet to the bird room/aviary. Blessings, J A

Many thanks for that Jo Ann. Very important!

Coincidentally, I've just been jolted by re-reading a sticky into organizing one of my own. Much better to have all this ready to hand when some emergency happens. And the act of collecting the various items has helped to focus on how and why each is useful.

Right now, I'd say it's the LED lights I recently purchased. The type that are for using with your laptop at night. With Joise's night frights, they have become a blessing to have as I found the night light was too far away from the cage.
The air filter is another thing I couldn't do without.

I love white vinegar--it's so versatile and completely budgie-safe for all cleaning needs, inside the cage, all toys, perches, bowls, etc

All comments above are great, too

Thanks again Jo Ann. May I ask about the millet spray? What is it & what is it for? And is cornstarch the same as what we know as cornflour?

Thanks Therm! Interesting, both the lights and the air filter. May I ask about the filter? I've been researching them and there is an enormous range of prices (from 10 up to hundreds) and types. Boiled ring!XXX (I actually typed "bewildering" )

Hi Starling! I agree with the vinegar 100%, so useful. And aren't all these comments illuminating?!

Thanks Pretty boy! Very important, even with "only" one budgie. I have yet to meet mine but have the appointment booked to get registration & details sorted before any urgent need happens. Even little things matter, like just knowing the way & parking, let alone the vet having all the info to hand. Hate the idea of something dire happening, panic & not knowing where to go, who to call.

Hi Jo Ann!
I am having a huge head-banging moment here....duh!!!
OF COURSE I know what millet spray is
I read your list of emergency things and thought of "spray" as a SPRAY! which then cut out the use of the rest of my pitiful collection of grey cells!
So sorry to be so dumb.
