Default Eating Paper

Hi all!

I have a cage with a pull out drawer which we fill with pellets of natural kitty litter (made of paper, fragrance free). Yesterday I started monitoring Petal's droppings as I saw a few wet ones which didn't quite look like the others. At any rate, I am using packing paper (newsprint) on top of the grates. When he first discovered the paper, he walked around on it as if he was excited and then took several bites of it and ate it. He has also eaten a few bites of colored paper on one of his bird toys.

I have searched the forum and read a few things about lining their cages and eating paper. I'm wondering if I need to remove any paper from his cage if he plans on making it part of his diet. He isn't shredding the paper and he doesn't eat it constantly but I want to be sure.

Side note: I have read conflicting information online regarding toys made out of colored wood. He has one toy which has vine like curly wood and he chews on that though I don't believe he has eaten it.

Admins, I am sorry for posting in this particular section. I'm not sure where it belongs...I know you'll move this post if you need to.

Thanks!
Petal's mom

Hey Cheley!

Don't worry, you posted this in the right place

Also, occasionally ingesting paper isn't going to hurt him. Some birds do chew on and accidentally swallow their cage lining, which is why it's always recommended to use paper such as newsprint that isn't harmful in the cage.

As for coloured wood and paper, that is perfectly fine, too. It is dyed with food-grade food colouring that won't hurt him, either.

Since he seems to like to chew so much, have you considered getting Petal a chew kabob like this? They tend to be very popular with budgies

Thanks! Yes, he loves wood kabobs! I just got him a new one two days ago and he has been feverishly working on it. His old one is in another corner...a lot smaller but certainly fun also!

Star has given you excellent advice.

Bird kabobs are great! You can also try some of the following if you are interested:

There are many different kinds of shredding toys you can try for Petal.

I bought Petal one of these shredding toys and he does love the tassel part at the bottom. Do I need to trim that back or is that only a concern when it comes to cotton fabric? Thanks for the suggestions and help!

I have the shredding toys shown in my post below and I've never trimmed the bottom "tassel" part.
My guys tear pieces off the "tassel" and throw them on the bottom of their cage.

Agreed! The only time hanging material is a concern is when it's cloth or fabric/cotton rope
