We have had Petal for 6 weeks and I've been talking to him often. Now that he says, "Baby bird" and the sounds ("kiss kiss kiss smooooooch") down pretty well, he is practicing a lot! He says it the same way as I do in terms of tonality and emphasis.
I was the first in the family to hear it and even recorded it for everyone. When I'd play it for DH and my girls, they would listen and shake their heads and say, "sorry mom...I just hear chirping and bird talk". I was wondering if it was just me making sounds in my mind and thinking I heard it not unlike visualizing things in clouds. However each day he has been vastly improving and today he has been the star of the show.
Usually when I walk up to his cage he hops along his perch or whatever he can or even flies to get close to my face. He listens intently and watches my face and my mouth and he can feel the pronunciations with consonants. He will lean in to give me a kiss, watch and listen and is as fascinated with me as I am with him. It's like he is trying to absorb the information and trying to learn.
My question (finally) is, when can I start teaching him new words and phrases? Should I wait a week or two to be sure he doesn't confuse things? At this very moment he is talking and sometimes he says, "baby baby <chirp chirp> <smoooooch> baby bird. Baby bird" but from what I see on YouTube in some birds is that they can mix things up as they are learning. He says it all correctly almost all the time.
I know I'm rambling here and clear as mud. In essence, how fast do you proceed in teaching? I can't find the info on this specifically. Is there any hard and fast rule or does it just depend on the bird?
He is a happy guy and I believe he has just started his adolescent molting.
