Default Do my budgies like each other?

Hi all!

So, I've had my two budgies for a while now. I've gotten over my initial panic (Are they sick? Are they ok? Can I keep them alive?) and we are now settled into a routine where everyone seems happy.

My birds have two very different personalities it seems. Bob (male) is very stoic. He doesn't really play much, but instead prefers to sit in one of his two favourite spots in the cage and sing and chatter all day. Birdie (female) is the polar opposite, climbing the cage bars, swinging from toys, chewing their ladder to bits etc!

My question is, I'd like to know if the two of them actually like each other, as I see conflicting signs. They preen each other's heads and faces which I think is a good sign. They 'kiss' each other (beaking?), and at night they cosy up together on the same perch to sleep.

Sometimes though, Birdie will nibble at Bob's feet, and I don't know what that means. At first I thought maybe she just wanted him away from 'her spot' in the cage? She has not caused him any injury, and he doesn't make any noise when she does it, but he does fly off to another spot. Occasionally she will follow him and do it again, but by the end of the day, there they are snuggling on the perch together.

So what's the verdict wise people? Are they friends, or is Birdie quietly planning Bob's demise, lol.

Thanks

Hi Blossom!

I'm glad things have gone well with Bob and Birdie so far and that they've settled into their new routine

As for their relationship, to me it sounds like they're just fine living together. Now, I wouldn't say they're absolutely in love with each other, which is not an issue. Like humans, not all budgies are compatible, and some get on better than others.

I believe that Bob and Birdie are quite happy living as roommates, and they clearly get along. Since you're not seeing any actual bickering and just "warning" toe nibbles, I don't think there's anything to be worried about. If they started loudly arguing or making aggressive physical contact, you would have to consider separating them, but for now just keep an eye on them

Thank you

It seems Birdie likes to chase Bob around. You see them inching their way across the main perch, Birdie following Bob, and when they get to the end Bob flies to the start of the perch and so it goes. I get the distinct impression Birdie just wants to play and Bob just...doesn't ha ha. My husband says he understands how Bob feels!!!

Most of the time they seem happy. Right now they are both perched on their ladder singing together They sure are funny to watch!

It does sound like they like each other. If they mutually preen, kiss, and cozy up to each other to sleep, they are definitely friends. Little minor bickering here and there is normal. Just like people who are close but spend all their time in the same room, you could imagine a little irritation now and then lol . It's nice that they get along well.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I'd love to attach a picture but unfortunately I don't seem to be able to.

I really appreciate your help and advice though.

Best wishes,

Blossom
