Default Sharp Beak

Hi all,

Petal's beak is becoming long and sharp in spite of the fact that I have two cuttlebones inside of his cage. They are placed near perches where he can access them easily. I do know that he uses them but not as often as he used to when we first brought him home a couple months ago.

His nails are getting longer also. I've read about trimming them but I'm not sure when to do this. As in, at what point? Also, I'm unsure that I want to do it myself as I'm a new budgie mom and am just building his trust and it's going well at this point.

Thoughts? Thank you!

Hi there,

Only in more extreme situations where there is an underlying illness where the beak will get abnormally long is it recommended to have the beak trimmed and this is something that will require an ongoing specialized care.
Most likely your Petal's beak is just fine. If you are concerned, you can post a couple of pics.

Under normal circumstances, the beak and nails will be naturally filed by mineral or calcium perches and also by the cuttlefish bone and the various chew toys, like the wooden ones, for example.

I agree completely Another thing that helps to maintain beaks and nails at a healthy length is plenty of perches of varying diameters and textures. Those will also help to keep the sharpness down

Thank you both! I got him a new cuttlebone and placed it in a different spot just to see what would happen. He has been using it so maybe he just needed a change of location. lol He also has a mineral block but I don't have anything containing calcium, though I have seen those in stores.

He has a wooden dowel perch, natural wood perch and the rope perch. He has a bendy ladder that he climbs up and down and across. Sidenote: I got him a playground today and he seems to be excited about it.

I appreciate the information.
