Default New Budgie Question(s)

Hi all!

I will be happily getting my first budgie soon, and I was just wondering if I should be feeding him the exact same brand of seed diet he was eating from the pet store and have him eat that until he adjusts to being in new surroundings? Or would it be okay if I buy a potentially better, different brand of seed right from the start..what are the chances he will eat it?

What's the best way to go about this?

Thanks in advance!

greetings and welcome to the forum.you came to the right place for all your budgie questions.since for now its used to 1 brand you can start with that and gradually add another type to see how it likes it.some budgies will like other foods better.plus you can slowly introduce veggies like romain lettuce, basil, thyme.

I'm sure our experienced staff will have a better way to help you out.in the meantime you can r3ad upon our stickies on food nutrition and so much more.

Blessings and thanks for joining us.

Hi there and to the forums!

Generally, when introducing new foods, it's best to do it gradually so as to not stress them. You can purchase a bag of higher quality seed and ask for a small bag of the food they feed them to transition, or if they don't do that, buy a small bag and then gradually mix it, increasing the new seed an decreasing the old seed so he is used to it.

If it's just a basic seed mix, however, (nothing specialised, etc.) then I'd reckon you could just buy that and as he settles into his new home he will also adjust to the new seed. This is what I did when I brought my little girl home since they were feeding her just a basic seed blend and I got a better quality one with the same basic seeds and she was just fine

Do you know which brand they are feeding him at the pet store?

Meanwhile, I'm glad you've joined the forums--how exciting you'll be getting your budgie soon! It's great you're doing your research first, that is wonderful. There's lots to read around here, so be sure to look through the Budgie Articles as well as the "stickies" (important threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on all the best in budgie care and practices!

Feel free to ask any other questions afterwards, if you have them!

Hope to see you around!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

Star is correct with regard to gradual transitioning to new foods - especially when changing from one type of pellet to another.
You can do the same with seed if it makes you more comfortable or,
ince most seed mixes contain at least some of the same types of seed, changing over to a higher quality seed mix initially without a gradual transition is just fine. A higher quality seed will not affect your budgie's desire to eat it nor will it be a problem for his digestive system.

https://talkbudgies.com/articles-diet...-seed-mix.html

Changing from one seed mix to a higher quality one is not the same as when you are converting to pellets or introducing vegetables.
A better quality seed mix will simply have more/better/different seeds included and they will probably be fresher than the seed in a lower quality mix.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

I believe it's the Kaytee Optimal Nutrition Diet (looks like it has seeds and pellets mixed in).

Thanks for the welcomes and advice!

In that case, I would recommend you buy a new brand of seed Kaytee is not a very reputable nor wholesome brand, and generally we try to advise you stay away from their food.

Dr. Harvey's, Volkman's and Vitakraft are some brands that are much better For more information as well as suggestions, look at this link:

Thank you! I got the Vitakraft diet today, as well as a small bag of Zupreen Fruit Blend. I am happy to announce that I am now a proud mama to a budgie, who I named "Tiki!" I will post pictures once he is more settled into his new home.

That sounds wonderful! My little girl also enjoys eating ZuPreem Fruitblend If you haven't opened it yet, you may want to exchange it for the "Canary" size of pellets. It's the same formula, just a smaller size that many budgies find easier to eat

I can't wait to meet Tiki! Congratulations

Yup yup! I read on quite a few threads on here that the canary size is the way to go, so I got that one

Thanks! I'm excited for when I will be able to share him with you all.

Well, it sounds like you've been doing plenty of birdie "homework" and I can tell Tiki is going to have a wonderful home with you

Keep up the great work (and reading through the forums!)
