Default Coop cups rusting?!

So I keep buying these bowls for my flock's veggies, and they keep losing their "stainless" coating somehow. I always end up finding little tiny specs of rust in the bottom of the bowls. I don't know what to do as an alternative at this point, because it's hard to find anything else around here. I have the 10 and 30 ounce bowls. I just don't don't what else to do, because I have thought about the ceramic cups that just have the hole in front. Like those at Petco stores. But I would then need to be able to clean it, well.

I just need to know what I can use as an alternative.

This is the bowls I used, I'm pretty sure even down to the brand:

Just a thought that I had for mine...would small ceramic ramekin bowls be suitable? They usually have straight up sides for stability and would be easy to wash clean. Possibly a bit big? But you might find smaller ones.

Edit: Unless these would fit into the stainless metal holders (for those without the wing nut connections), they would either have to be on the cage floor or set on a safe platform. Mine is used to them being on the floor but might not be ok for a flock of course. Just thinking.

Hi Kristen,

Are you sure those bowls are truly stainless steel?

I have a few stainless steel bowls I use for my birds (and also other stainless steel cookware) and I have never seen any rust in them.
The birds' bowls I have them for years.

I agree with Ana, stainless steel is thus called because it doesn't rust.
I also use stainless steel cups and have never had any problem. From your description, it seems they are not stainless steel. I would try another brand that says specifically that it's made of stainless and the problem should go away

Kristen,

I buy mine from Drs Foster and Smith and have had no problems with the stainless bowls rusting. The only problem I had was with a couple of the screw on clamps on the lovebird's cages. I've switched to the ones with the stainless hangers and have had no problem with them thus far.

I thought the same thing about stainless steel not rusting & none of my years-old cookware ever has either. But think I can make out that the label says stainless steel on it, though difficult to be sure. Perhaps there are different grades of the steel.

I actually bought ones that said that they were stainless steel. I think the quality must have just been really terrible. I'll have to look at that link that you posted Deb. Hopefully they're not too expensive.

Kristen,

Actually, the ones from Drs Foster and Smith are much less expensive than any of the others I've seen.

I'm sorry that has happened Kristen . Either they were labeled as something they were not, or as was mentioned maybe there are different grades and it was so low grade that it still rusts? I'd check Dr's Foster & Smith as Deborah suggested .

I have checked Drs. Foster and Smith, and will order 2 10oz and 2 30oz bowls. Their 10oz water bowls haven't rusted yet, but I'm preparing for the worst, Until that happens, I will use them as additional food cups I suppose.

Anyway, I will order them probably in the day or two. Thanks for your help everybirdie!
