Default What to do/ The Saga of my growing Flock

Ok. Many of you have seen my recent posts. But here's the quick back story and then the rest....

It begins:

I got a budgie. Yay. Her name is Cosmo. I've had her a month tomorrow.

I got another budgie. Yay. His name is Harvey. I've had him a week today.

I buggered up. Boo. Didn't quarantine.

I'm fixing my mistake and bought a big Prevue F040 (will be here Saturday) for the main house and will use my current flight cage to separate my babies for now and do this better. Yay.

The rest:

My sister got a budgie. Yay. Her name is Snowy. She's had her a month.

My sister calls today to say she is bringing Snowy to my house tonight because she doesn't want her anymore. Boo.

I will quarantine. Yay.

BUT:

I don't think I have it in me to do so many birds! I don't want Snowy just going to a random place! I think having an odd number is not great because of birdy bonding? I can't imagine a 4th so Snowy can have a partner. Isn't it bad to have 2 females and one male together?

Help me please. I need advice. BAD! I want to cry right now....

Hi. I'm sorry things aren't going well right now.

Why is your sister dumping the bird on you?
It's obviously more stressful to have three birds, in three cages in three different rooms.
And if you are not planning to keep Snowy, can she not keep the bird and rehome it herself? After all, she committed to having the bird as a pet.

Three birds together would likely cause some problems, sadly.

She's dumping Snowy on me because she "blames" me for my nephew wanting a bird. Since Aunty Angie had one.

I "can" keep Snowy. I'm not super keen on having so many birds as it was never my intention. I've done the research enough to know that it costs a lot to have more...

I figured it would be confirmed that 3 is not good together. So Id have to do 3 in 3 separate rooms for a month. Then house 2 together and one alone. Which is sad to me and the whole reason I wanted 2. And only 2.

The idea of rehoming to a stranger is terrifying to me. (which is why I read and re-read and follow the threads about avoiding breeding like they are my bible lol)

I live in Cincinnati Ohio. Does anyone have a recommendation for a home for Snowy that would be a good home?

I am very sorry about the position your sister has put you in! I fully understand not wanting to add any more birds to your two and applaud you for knowing your limits.

I hate to suggest this, but will the pet store take Snowy back since your sister has only had her a month? Otherwise, you may have luck posting here to re-home Snowy. The only other suggestions I have is to either try to contact rescues in your area and see if they will list Snowy on places like Petfinder.com or post an ad on craigslist.

If you end up needing to go the craigslist route, make sure put a reasonable adoption fee in the ad (i.e. would not suggest free to good home). I say reasonable because I saw an ad where the person was basically asking retail for the cage/toys/food/parakeets. Unsurprisingly, that ad has been up awhile and is still up. When you get an interested person, make sure to vet them to your satisfaction.

Best of luck going forward! I hope you get this figured out soon.

Good luck! This is a tough situation to be in, and I hope all goes well, and if it doesn't, that you find a good home for her!

Angie, I'm sorry that your sister isn't taking responsibility for her actions, and blamed you for her child wanting the bird, then gave the bird to you!

See how it goes. A lot also depends on each individual bird's personality. She might be fine in a cage by herself. Especially if after quarantine she is in the room with the others.

I'm still learning a lot about mutations myself, so we'll let the 'mutations experts' say for sure, but let me take a crack at it... How about a Sky blue/opaline/greywing/dominant pied. She is very pretty, that's for sure .
