Default Ozzy won't eat

We had Ozzy and Olive together for a couple of years now but unfortunately we lost Olive last week (we're not sure what it was because the vet isn't used to birds but thinks it may have been canker). We've been keeping a close eye on Ozzy and he seems to be completely fine apart from he seems to be too scared to eat? I can see he's looking to go and get food and I was wondering if it was because he's on his own now and doesn't have a look-out? I'm really worried because I don't want him to starve but I also want to make sure he's ok because we don't know where Olive could have got it from and were very surprised that Ozzy appears to be fine. Any ideas?

You have my deepest sympathies over your Olive's passing.

If your Olive has truly passed due to canker, then it would really be best that you take Ozzy to more knowledgeable vet, an avian vet specialist, so that he is properly examined. This is the best course of action to take, given the fact you aren't completely sure of what illness led to Olive's passing nor if the illness has been passed to Ozzy.

I'm sending my best wishes to you and your boy and I hope all goes well.

Aww thank you, I'm so worried about him being lonely but I'm going to give him a couple of months before we look for a new friend for him just so I can make sure he's ok

Thank you, I'm not sure where there is an avian vet around so I'll have to have a look because he's so lovely and I'd hate to lose him too I feel like I'm not having much luck with birds as Ozzy and Olive were my first and we got a cockatiel called Fin a few months later who we then lost at 5 months old after he swallowed cotton from his perch Fingers crossed he'll be ok

I'm so sorry about your loss of Olive! Best wishes for the future. I hope you can get Ozzy to eat! Does he have a hooded dish?

Thank you, he has the biggest Vision cage so I thought maybe it was scary for him to go to the bottom of the cage on his own for food. I've put a smaller bowl on his favourite perch so hopefully he'll eat something

Smile Ozzy

Ozzy is probably mourning his friend. Try soaking millet spray in drinking water with electrolyte and probiotics and then offering to your budgie. Play music or other budgie chatter or A TV spend extra time with him and include him in play.
This may take several days or weeks to get him back in a happy state of mind.

to look for an avian vet, put your zip code or the zip code for the closest large city near you and ask for avian or exotic vet address and phone number. It may take a couple of hours travel as it does for many members on TB. We have a round trip of 1 1/2 hours or more at rush hour to reach our vet. Weigh your budgie everyday for a week and keep a record then once a week going forward. This plus condition of droppings will be a good indication of illness. A radical change up or down in weight is an important. Have your birds been out side in their cage for a little sun. They may have been exposed to droppings or other contact with wild birds that can carry canker. A gram scale can be purchased at walmart in kitchen department or even on Amazon expectm to pay around 20 dollars . It is a very important component of the birdy first aid kit. Look for Stickys in the health and diesase sections here on TB.
It is important to find that avian vet ASAP before an emergency occurs with Ozzy. The electrolyte can also be sprinkled on moist egg and biscuit and fresh food Thrive and avigain are good supplements to add to boost immune system . Also Multivitamin like Prime or Soluvite D by vetafarm in Australia. Herb salad can also allow your bird to self select natural herbs. These products mentioned can be found at ladygouldianfinch.com, Foster and Smith vet catalog, or Windy city Parrot, which carries avitech natural products for birds. There may be others that other members may like. Several of above venders ship internationally . Amazon also carries electrolytes etc. If your bird seems chilled provide a heat only ceramic lamp with reflector like the ones used for reptiles. Cover cage partially and be sure bird is not in a draft. These are first aid product and actions to help your bird stay healthy under stress like loosing his budgie friend. Blessings for your little ones health
and emotional recovery. Jo Ann

Hi Flossie,

I'm so sorry to hear about little Olive!

I agree that Ozzy seems to be depressed and in mourning for the loss of his friend. Aluz's suggestion to take him to the vet is spot-on--it's always best to ensure he doesn't have any illness that could be the cause of Olive's death. If he really isn't carrying any illness, then he probably just needs some time. Lots of TLC and a calming environment will help him, hopefully some millet in electrolyte will tempt him to take a few nibbles.

Please keep us updated on how he's doing!
