Default First nail trim for Greyjoy

During out of cage time today I noticed Grey's nails getting a little long. I really was dreading having to trim them as it was my first time also. Thankfully his little pink toes made it wicked easy to see the vein and avoid it. I got him to perch on my finger and while he was distracted by some millet I was able to slip under each nail & get them done without grabbing or holding him. Very pleased with how well he took it, in fact I don't think he even noticed. Should be even easier next time. I was curious however about some guidelines for nail maintenance, such as time frames or certain lengths. Is it something I should be doing like every two weeks or just when they look a little long?

I'm glad your Greyjoy hardly noticed the pedicure.
You can use your judgement/intuition on when you think your boy will need another trim.
You don't need to do so on a scheduled time frame, you can trim the toenails when you think they are long enough to justify the trim.

Thanks for this thread. Mexico and Ice, my budgies, are not hand tamed and probably never will be. How would you handle that when it comes to nail-clipping?

Tia,
https://talkbudgies.com/your-budgies-...ng-budgie.html

This post shows you how to hold the budgie, I hope this helps as my experience is limited. You want to be very careful of holding the chest too tightly as you can suffocate them. Maybe enlist a buddy to help either hold the bird or do the trimming.

Thanks. The only thing I'm worried about is losing their trust. But thank you anyway!

Some budgies' nails grow longer than others, and some are filed more easily by normal, day-to-day activities. My girl Mallorn has never had her toenails clipped, and she's four years old! It's very well that some budgies may never need to have them clipped, and that's just fine too.

I'm so glad that Greyjoy took his little pedicure well!

Oh gosh, get your reading glasses on haha kidding. Not saying you would, but "I" would need to do that! I don't ever clip budgie toenails. Certain individuals might have reason to need clipping, but many budgies will wear them down sufficiently on surfaces, or not grow long in the first place. Personally, I think budgies are so small and light that they don't dig into my skin anyway, so unless they overgrow and are in danger of getting caught in a toy, I wouldn't even bother.

I have only trimmed the nails on Sunny's feet because she has a slight disability with one toe that is pointing sideways and therefore the nail itself doesn't get worn down. The other budgies don't have a problem with their nail lengths.

Thanks folks for the different perspectives. I would love to not have to trim his nails again. It seemed like a good opportunity to try since he was calm & distracted. I didn't feel they were being worn down at all by daily activities & I was afraid they would overgrow I guess I just assumed it was part of budgie maintenance, perhaps I will hold off and see if trimming is truly necessary.

Kristina, as the experience went so well I wouldn't be too worried about it. It's great to know you can do it if needed without any stress but Greyjoy will hopefully be able to keep his nails nice and trim without needing any assistance.
