Default Help Ants!!!

Hi, just this spring there have been ants coming in the house, my mom and I figured it was because we left a door open one day and figured that how they got in. So seeing that they were in the kitchen we put borax in there. However today when I was brushing my teeth I noticed something behind the toilet more specifically on the wall. There was a pile of what looked like dirt coming from where the tile grout is. This has never happened before and I'm scared of contacting an exterminator because of insecticides which are defiantly dangerous to birds.
What should I do?

I just looked at the website for my favorite bird safe insecticide, Orange Guard. They list locations sold, but it is only in the US unfortunately. For anyone in the US go to OrangeGuard.net. It is organic citrus oil from oranges. Orange oil must be extremely toxic to insects because it works very well. I've used it on ants and house flies. I've used it in the room with the birds. It's not a chemical or toxin, and leaves a light pleasant orange scent. The consistency is a little heavier than water. It does leave an oily residue, but wipes up easily. The way I heard about this product was through a bird forum.

We used to have a very bad ant problem. Ever since we sprayed poison outdoors outside the perimeter of the house, we haven't had any since. That was a year ago if I remember correctly. So that's what I'd recommend, spraying around the outside base of your house. Close your windows before spraying. If you're in an apartment, let management know to do something about it. Good luck!

Julie has given great advice. Natural insecticides such as citrus oil work well for indoors, and spraying outdoors (ensuring there are no open windows) is good, too.

If you're worried about the ants getting into the seed, you can store it in the refrigerator along with flour, sugar, and other things not stored in airtight containers. We used to do this in Florida because ants were a huge problem.

Good luck!

Please take a look at these threads:

I've found that spraying White Vinegar around areas in your home where you've seen ants helps deter them as well.

Ok thank you
I used borax and powdered sugar at the wall and I haven't seen any ants since but I'll try to find the orange oil. Is it just a diluted essential oil?

No, it's not an 'essential oil'. You can look more closely at the product here https://orangeguard.net Maybe there is a similar product where you are.
