Default Vacation help

Hello, we are going away on vacation for two long weeks. Bruce will be going to a bird sitter during that time. I'm worried she will think we abandoned her, or that she is lost. Is there anything I can do to comfort her while we are away? Will she be angry at us when we come back? I'm getting major separation anxiety thinking about it, but she just can't come with us this time. Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi there,

I went to Germany last year and left my little girl for the same amount of time at one of our friend's houses who had experience with birds. I was worried about the same thing!

Since we knew them already, we invited them over a few times close to the time of our departure and had them "get to know" Mallorn so she wouldn't be so scared when the time came.

Either way, she did fine over the two weeks and when I got back, she was very happy to see me!

After the initial happiness of seeing me, she did get a little mad at me (i.e turning her back when I walked in, etc.) but when she realised I was staying this time, she was fine in a day or so

Good luck!

In addition to Star's excellent suggestions, I would consider buying a "Mimic Me" toy for the birdsitter to play for Bruce while you are away.

You can record yourself saying a couple of his favorite phrases.
The recording will play back your words, phrases or brief songs (up to 10 seconds long) in one of two repetition modes. Messages can be different for either of the two modes and can be recorded over repeatedly. Do not place the Mimic Me inside your bird's cage.

Here's a link and it is also available through amazon.com.

Hello! So I was thinking about it and having her try out a place first in the short term before her 2 week stay sounds best. The voice recorder might also be a good pick, since we always say goodnight to her. I went and checked out the best rated bird hotel here, but I'm not sure it's the right choice. The budgies would be in a small side room with no view and lots of noise from all the macaws in the main room. Does anyone know a good place in the san Francisco area for budgies? I'm going to keep hoping I can find someone nearby who can watch her.

Hello I can sympathise with you regarding this dilemma, I am extremely lucky as I have my son who shifts into our home when we go away. He knows my budgies very well and is here daily as he drops his dog off daily while he is at work. do you have any family member that could come around daily so you can leave your Bruce in familiar surroundings, or a trusted neighbour you can train and teach how to care for Bruce?
I do hope things work out for you.
