Default Budgie in the back yard

I have a budgie that has been visiting my bird feeder. I feel very frustrated and stupid as I was gaining his trust. Then I tried to grab him to put him in a cage. I did not get his wings properly, so rather than hurting him I just let go. Needless to say he was very frightened and flew up into a big tree and disappeared.

I felt horrible about this as he is obviously an escaped pet and I was trying to catch him to keep him from predators.

I was really gaining its trust which bothers me even more as I've read they have good memories. Any suggestions if it returns?

I would try using a bird or butterfly net if he returns.

Some people have managed to catch escaped budgies by putting food inside a cage and the budgie actually goes inside to get it.

I hope you will be successful.

I put a cage out the last several days by the bird feeder, but it seems to prefer the feeder. Hopefully it will return tomorrow, but my fear is that it will now associate me with danger.

He obviously knows food is available at your bird feeder so hopefully this will override his memory of your attempt at catching him.
Does he allow you to get quite close, a towel or cloth thrown over or the net is the way to go.
let's hope you have success next time.

He did as of yesterday. I was almost touching him when I tried to catch him. He had seemed to trust me at the time. Good idea on the towel.

It may take a couple of days for you to regain enough trust that he'll let you get close to him again.
Are you planning to try a towel or a net?

Try to nix the feeder temporarily, and put a shallow dish either on top o in front of the cage where the door is and allow him to get used to that. You'll have to be watching and rig it up so that you can release the door when he's inside. Patience will be key for you here. Good luck!

EDIT: Also when you're trying to lure him in closer, try playing some budgie sounds outside. That's a good one for getting their attention! Good luck!

I really hope you're able to catch him! Poor little fellow doesn't realise you're trying to help!
