Default Eavesdropping on budgies

This is something that has been on my mind since bringing Toki home. As I sit here listening to her converse with Greyjoy from quarantine I wonder how much can they tell about each other based on vocalizations alone? I know they are obviously aware of each other & I thought perhaps they at least knew they were both budgies. But maybe they can tell the others' gender as well. I can tell their voices apart & am curious if there are gender-specific sounds budgies make or if it was more like when you're on the phone with a stranger & can usually tell if they are male or female. I can't help but imagine what they are talking about, maybe making introductions or a little small talk, then again maybe I just spend too much time eavesdropping on budgies hehe

I also enjoy speculating about what our animals may be saying to one another - or to us.

Unfortunately, unless we can learn to speak their particular languages, their conversations will remain a mystery.

Kristina, this is an interesting thread . I do wonder about all of that, now that you've mentioned it... Too bad we'll never know!

All I know is that Chip has a really different sounding voice from Mink or the other male budgies that I've had. You can almost say it sounds like he's a different type of parakeet species, it sounds that much different.

For some reason a always felt that animals understand what we say on the other hand, and I am always really careful about what I say around my pets.

Hmm--I know they can tell the species apart, but male and female distinction is interesting. I wonder?

I've always wanted to be able to hear animals talk They sure would have lots to say about us humans, I'm sure!

Sometimes it is completely clear what they are saying! It's always a little chaotic when it's time for the budgies to get out of Cockatiel Simon's cage and go back to their own homes and he does. not. like. chaos. He is very clear that however much he enjoyed their company, it is time for them to go when I reach in for them (he has an open top cage, so they exit that way....) Spray millet is served all around to soothe any ruffled feathers after they are all back home.

I'm sure they can tell gender. After all, most birds have a song to attract a mate, and those certainly are gender specific. A male wouldn't be singing for another male, would he?
