Default Budgie sticking whole head out of cage at the top???

Hello
My budgie Atticus has just climbed to the top of his cage (to which I'm super impressed by) and then proceeded to stick his head out of the bars. Then he tried to get the rest of him out and boy did I panic!!!!
The bars have a 20mm gap but I'm worries about him persevering and squeezing himself out. Would a budgie do that?? Could he fit his body and wings out??? Shall I board the doors and windows 😥😂😅

If your budgie is able to stick his head out through the cage's bars, then it's very clear the bar spacing on the cage is not appropriate to house a budgie and in order to avoid an accident where your Atticus can get stuck or out of the cage unsupervised, it's best to get another cage with the adequate bar spacing (1/2 inch - 1.27cm or less). Jenna,

Spacing of the bars on a budgie cage should never be more than 12.7mm (1/2").
It is important you get a cage with appropriate bar spacing as soon as possible.
Atticus can easily become stuck between the bars and injure himself severely.

The very minimum sized cage for one budgie is 18"x18"x18"
(45.72mm x 45.72mm x 45.72 mm)
Please keep in mind that the bigger the cage you can provide for him the better -- as long as you ensure the bar spacing is no more than the 12.7 mm specified.

Jenna,

if you have a Pets at home near you, the Hagen Vision cages sold there will have the correct sized bar spacing for a budgie.
If you go to a local pet store, you need to ensure the bar spacing is the correct size (don't trust what they tell you- they may accidentally give you bad information).
It's important that you get a good cage with the correct size bar spacing as soon as possible to prevent your little budgie injuring himself.

Frantically searched for a cage tonight as all shops shut here by then and found a breeder who sells them. He is now is a much better practical cage and my lesson is learnt.

On the plus side, transferring him from one cage to the other was a doddle. He let me pick him and pop him into next cage and when I was putting his things in he hopped onto arm and sat on me. Eventually I had to move my arm nearer his perch and encourage him to step over. He isn't frightened at all 😄 He's amazing!!

I'm so glad little Atticus is just fine and you were able to find him a more suitable cage in such a short amount of time

Well done and I'm glad everything is going so well with your sweetheart
