Default Juvenile moulting behaviour changes?

My four month old budgie, Snowy, has progressed so much the last two weeks... It's like something just clicked in him all of a sudden and now he loves being out with me and my husband. It's great!

So he's been acting particularly, well, sooky lately and I've never seen a budgie act like it! It's super adorable, but I'm just curious to know if there's a specific reason for this? E.g. Is it likely just something to do with his transition to adulthood or is it likely to continue?

These are the couple of behaviours I'm talking about:
For about a week, He has been obsessed with head and neck scratches, particularly on his forehead. My guess is his moulting is making him uncomfortable and it's a relief for him. He's got the spiky head thing going on right now haha. He will let me give him head scratches for about 15 minutes, twice a day, providing his favourite toy is close to his head. He won't offer his head for a scratch unless it's there. Weird! He puffs up and closes his eyes and it is verryyy cute.

More unusual: in the evenings for the last three days, after a while Snowy hops from my finger to my shirt when we're sitting on the couch. He has been kind of nestling in to my clothes, to the point where you can't see his feet, and today he was even spreading his wings a little to get lower, similar to when he's having a bath. I let him play with his toy again here, and today he kept trying to go under the toy, down low, turn his head around to grab the toy with his beak and then he was kind of rolling onto his back while holding it.

It's all been very cute! He's happy to be with me, sit on my shoulder and chew on my hair when his favourite toy isn't there but it seems like when it is there, it makes him feel particularly safe and wanting cuddles? Is he falling for his toy? Hahaha, it's just a hollow plastic ball with a bell inside and some rope tied onto it

Hi there,

I'm glad you have been noticing so much progress with your Snowy, he really seems to be a total sweetheart!
The behavioural changes when moulting will mostly depend on the budgie itself and on the type of moult. On a given moult, a budgie may not be temporarily affected by moodiness, but this doesn't mean that it won't happen in the future when going through another moult.

It's great that the trusting bond you have with Snowy allows you to help him out with the itch from the moult. It's also normal for Snowy to use the toys or a perch to scratch his head when he is on the cage.
Besides scratching the head/neck area you can also offer Snowy a shallow dish of water for him to bathe in as that will also help in terms of soothing the itch from the moult. If Snowy isn't keen on taking baths, you can offer him a dripping wet leafy green for him to freshen up in or you can gently mist him with a spray bottle.
During this time you can also offer him egg food which is rich in protein, this will not only help your budgie to replenish the energy levels lost from the moult, but also promote healthy feather growth.

As for the need to nestle and find a cosy place to hide, usually younger as in weaning or recently weaned budgies are the ones to exhibit this behaviour.
Are you sure your Snowy is a male budgie?

If Snowy only plays and uses the toy for preening purposes then there is not cause for concern. When the love for a toy turns into obsession, there will be excessive regurgitation done on the toy as well as increased matings.

Aluz has given excellent advice and I agree with her 100%

Snowy sounds like a very sweet little bird for sure! I'm so glad he's progressed well

Thanks Aluz for all that info! Very very helpful! I will definitely try egg in his diet to help him through the moulting process. He does like his bird bath but perhaps I'll put it in his cage a bit more often if this helps his moulting too.

As for gender.. Hmmm.. There's still a chance Snowy is a girl I suppose!
I thought a boy for these reasons:
Recessive pied blue, his cere was soft pink when I got him, now it's purpley, with a tiny bit of blue at the top and around his nostrils there are small white rings
He has picked up words very quickly
He isn't nippy at all, and the lady at the pet adoption shop said girls were more prone to nipping fingers, sorry if this is completely wrong haha.

Also very good to hear about his toy... I love watching him play with it and I didn't want to take it away from him!

Thanks again for the advice I love how friendly and helpful the members are on this forum!

You're very welcome!
We would love to see a pic of two of your Snowy and if you want his gender confirmed, you can post a photo taken in natural lighting (no flash from camera) showing the whole beak/cere area.

There we go Aluz, finally got around to doing a picture so what do you think - boy or girl? Hopefully the avatar is high enough quality to see!
