Adjusting housing to block escape
Hi guys,

We have had our boy Baymax for a few weeks now and we purchased a large parrot cage for him a couple of weeks back. He has started freaking out over the sounds of a particular type of bird outside and is really keen to get out. We have had him out the past couple of days and have made the hpuse safe for him to do so, however there is a larger gap on one side of his main door which he can escape through at any time.

I am looking for suggestions on a budgie friendly way to make this gap smaller so that he cannot get out, as I am afriad he will escape when I am not home and hurt himself.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Kali :) I'm so glad you want Baymax to have a nice big cage to live in!

However, the cage you got for him is unfortunately not suitable for his needs. As he is able to escape, that indicates the spacing between the bars and doors is more than 1/2 inch, the maximum bar width on any cage for budgies. The fact that it's a parrot cage confirms this :o There is not a "budgie safe" way to fix this problem.

If he were to get overexcited and try to escape, he very well could, or he could even get stuck and be seriously injured or killed. It's best that you look for a new cage with the correct bar spacing and meanwhile put him in his old cage, even if it's small.

Best of luck! :fingerx:

Star is completely correct. You should never house a budgie in a cage that has spacing greater than 1/2" between the bars.

I would suggest you either return the cage or sell it on Craigslist and get a cage with appropriate bar-spacing for Baymax as quickly as possible before he ends up severely injured from trying to squeeze between the bars.

Please be sure to update us when you've done so.

Best wishes!

Thanks guy!
I will look for a new cage for him and re-sell this one.
It is only one space that he can fit through that unfortunately means I have to do this. The rest of the spacing is correct for him (I read all the info you have on correct housing and pulled out the measuring tape! Haha).

I will let you know when we have found him a new happy space, and attempt to upload a picture!

Here are a couple of options:

Pet Shop Direct - Bird Cage Medium Flight Cage BC6143 SAVE $70

Bird Cage Multi Use Large

Just ensure the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2" (1.25 cm)
