Default Traveling this Sunday with my budgie, in need of some help

So, I'm going to be traveling this Sunday, and I have to bring my bird with me, as there will be nobody in my house to care for him while I'm gone. I have no choice in not traveling or not, it's for a family thing.
But, a little information about my budgie:
He's about five years old and has never left my house before
He's been in the same room for about a year
No medical problems at all

So, what I'm worried about is him getting stressed and getting sick. There's no way I can leave him alone, and there's no way I can get out of traveling. The car ride is only around an hour and a half long, and we're going to be staying there for 5-6 days. Is there anything I can do for him to help him not stress?

Hi, to travel with a budgie is quite easy but as you are aware all birds react differently to situations.
Ideally you need a small travel cage, make sure you have adequate food to take with you for the stay, budgies are notorious for being picky eaters and do not easily take to different brands of seed, pellets, e.t.c. Ensure the car is not too hot if you are in your Summer .Place a cover around the cage as you are carrying it out to the car. If at all possible try to make sure the cage is as secure as possible, in case of unavoidable braking or swerving.
If it is winter make sure the car is warm, do not have windows down or air conditioners blowing directly onto the cage, playing some relaxing music can help also.
Do not leave water in the cage whilst travelling, Of course you will be talking to him to reassure him and let him know you are there also. Most budgies travel fine, I hope you enjoy your trip.

I've traveled with my bird(s) many times.
Generally it is more than a 7.5 hour trip one way.

When I take my birds in the car, I secure the cage in the front passenger seat with the seat belt.
Although I have several different size travel cages, I like to use the biggest one possible if I'm going to be gone for more than a few days.
The Prevue Hendryx Clean Life which is 18W x 18D x 24H works well in the front seat of my Prius.
I put the seat belt around it and move the seat so the cage is also braced against the dashboard.
That way I'm sure it isn't going to shift when I'm driving.

Take all swinging toys out of the cage.
You can leave a couple of sturdy perches in the cage and if you have a toy or two that attached to the cage side they can remain.

I always fill my bird's water cup about 1/2 way once I have the cage in the car and a dish of their regular food in the cage as well.

Generally, I keep the cage covered except for the side facing me.
I leave that portion open so my bird(s) can see me and I can talk to them while I'm driving. Since your budgie has not traveled before, playing music, talking to him and reassuring him regularly will be important.

As Pretty Boy mentioned, be sure the air conditioner or heat is not blowing onto the cage or that the budgie will be subjected to drafts.

Good luck with the drive!

You've been given great advice from Pretty Boy and FaeryBee

I'm sure your little one will do just fine

Thanks for the help, everyone.
And for the calming music, is it something to worry about if really, REALLY heavy metal calms him down?

No worries there.
Budgies, just like people, have their own taste in music. I imagine he learned to like it because that is what you like.

Yeah, I love heavy music. My bird loves Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold in particular.
