Default 1st Male, preen more or itchy feathers?

Hi everyone

Our new boy is quarantined of course. But I wonder if he is itchy or just that males preen more? His picture is on the end of my Photos thread.

He has clipped wings, and is quite a big fluffy boy. Do they get itchy when feathers are growing back in?

He seems to be preening more than my Bluebird. Could this be nervousness or a male thing, or could he have mites? I cannot see any sign of anything untoward, and I do not want to take him to a vet until he has had a few days to settle as he is eating and active etc.

I wonder if I am just imaging it, being a nervous new mum?!

Thanks for reading x

Budgies of both genders will preen to the same degree.
Maybe your boy is starting or is currently moulting and during this time there is an increase in preening.

From the photos you posted I'm not seeing signs of mites on your new boy.

aluz is 100% correct.

Please take the time to read these threads about molting as they should answer most of your questions:

Default Moulting and mites update!

Thank you for your replies

Today as we were having a little bonding session I saw a single mite/louse crawling on his chest! So I think it is a combination of the a minor infestation and moulting.

So I've had to upset him by treating him but hopefully he'll be more comfortable.

I imagine it is easy to miss a very small infestation as I could find no signs under his wings/tail/face where I'd expect to see them.

Thank you again

You're very welcome!

I'm glad you were able to spot the parasite and have already treated your budgie.
I hope your budgie boy will soon feel better and completely free of the annoying lice/mites.
