Default Towelled for the first time -- not scared?

I finally caught my newest girl in a towel so I could clip her pesky toe nails. I'm used to birds squirming around in the towel and trying to escape while I'm trying to not cut their nails too short. However, Lacey just laid there, slow blinked a bunch at me, and seemed to enjoy it? When I put my hand back in the cage and let her go, she just kind of laid there for a few seconds until I kinda flicked my hand a little, then flew away. Did she actually enjoy it, or was she just too scared to fight? Should I be worried?

Hi Katie,

I'm glad that Lacey wasn't scared by you picking her up to clip her toenails. Some birds, provided they trust you at least a little bit, are not scared by getting picked up on the rare occasions we need to.

To me it sounds like she recognised you weren't going to hurt her and just went with it. If she were scared, she would have at least been shaking and you would have felt her heartbeat in your fingers. If none of this happened, I venture to say she is relatively fine with being picked up, which is pretty good!

I had the choice of very gently and very slowly toweling one of my foster budgies or never letting her out of her cage. In the evening when it was clearly time to go "to bed", she actually walked under the tea towel a couple of times. I can now usually get her back without doing that (or, smart girl, she goes back on her own), but my guideline was that I started out moving at about half of the speed she was, and the faster she moved, the slower I moved. She was also always given a treat afterwards. I can now usually get her back on my hand, though it typically involves me moving verrrry slowly and dealing with her jumping off and having to start all over again. It can take a while.

Also, my vet toweled my cockatiel to check something out and medicate him and she is so skilled at it that he acted as if she was doing him a favor.

Those are some good guidelines. I'll definitely try them out next time. I usually try to corner them and then snatch before they figure out what's happening. That's how I'm used to grabbing my cat for vet time.
