Default Friend is getting budgie

Hello everybudgie, I have a big problem. A friend/acquaintance of mine is going to get a budgie, which would be exciting if she had done research before considering getting one. But she hasn't. This is a particularly big problem, because I don't actually know her that well, and only see her once or twice a year. I feel really terrible for her future budgie! She lives on a farm with lots of other animals and it is going to be a total impulse buy! I'll bet anything that she has no idea about proper housing, diet, taming rules, or anything like that! How can I convince her to not get a budgie? Never mind, by the time I next see her/talk to her, she'll already have gotten the budgie! Please help!

Tia,

Why don't you try explaining that budgies are very tiny, fragile creatures and even though your friend has a lot of experience with farm animals, this will be a very different experience for her.

Suggest she join the forum and spend at least a week or so reading the information about the best practices in caring for budgies for their optimum health and well-being before getting her bird.

Tell her you know she is a kind, compassionate person who will want to do only the best for her budgie and this is the best way for her to ensure that happens.

Good luck.

Provide her with the research! Text/email some links to forums like this. Ask her if she has any questions.
An acquaintance of mine was thinking about getting a budgie so we texted for a while, and I answered many of her questions (do they make a lot of noise? are they messy? do I actually need to spend time with it? etc...) and gave her links to some information. In the end she decided a bird wasn't for her and got a hamster

That's the thing. I would love to be able to talk to her, but I don't have her email address or any of her contact information. I hope that I'll be seeing her soon and will be able to talk to her. I do have some amount of indirect contact through other friends. Perhaps I'll have to talk to her that way.

Wish me luck!

Simply ask one of your other friends for her contact information explaining you need to get in touch with her directly.

I agree with the advice you have been given.

Rather than talking her out of it, just and help to educate her.
I was also behind on my knowledge of budgies when I got Jimmy and I quickly learnt on here what I needed too, so I would start with making her very aware of the basics she needs to know.

A Facebook friend of mine also decided after seeing my budgies on FB that she wanted one. She asked me a lot of questions on chat, and I helped her with all the knowledge I could give her. She is a member on here but rarely posts.
Her little boy Rio, is a very friendly, darling little bird who now talks and is as social as anything.

Thanks so much for the advice so far everyone! My first reaction was to try and talk her out of it, but I think you are correct in saying that it would be better to educate her on proper practices. Your posts give me hope.

This is definitely the place to find all the information on how to properly care for a budgie. And your friend would feel welcome here, I'm sure!

When I rescued my little budgie friend (Artoo) from the Great Outdoors last month (one month tomorrow, actually...) I knew nothing about what I should or shouldn't be doing. Between the stickies, FAQs, and individual posts, I've learned a lot.

I hope that with plenty of Budgie Articles and Stickies, she'll soon be on her way to actually knowing about budgies!

Best of luck with getting in touch with her

Suggest that she consider a rescue adoption.
