Hi everyone. I just wanted to share with you a little update on my new friend, Myst. I think he's settling in quite well. Today, he's been really noisy, and jumping and climbing all over his cage and toys. He's been here a week, and I have just started the next step in the Taming Exercises, which is to put your hand in the cage in a non-threatening way. He seems pretty good about it. What do you guys make of his behaviour? What makes them act hyper like this? Is it because he's happy, and settling into his new home?
Your new budgie is settling into his new home with you. He feels comfortable and I think he will form a special bond with you.The reason why he is excited is that he is happy and budgies can be very active to. My budgie gets the glitters and goes silly to it just that he is excited and loves to play... I don't know why they go hyper... I love my bird so much he makes me happy.... Someone else may be able to answer your question for you....
It definitely sounds as though things are going well with your friendship with Myst.
The behaviour he is showing can be a couple of things, one he wants out of the cage or he simply is becoming more adventurous and exploring. Does he tend to make a lot of noise and mouth the bars look around and seem to be acting as though he wants out?
Try offering him some millet from your fingers through the bars to start with. How does he react when you clean his cage, replace fresh water daily?
Yes, Myst is happy and settling in to his new home very well.
When you put your hand in his cage, hold a few seeds in your palm and just keep your hand very still.
It sounds as though Myst may be ready to explore your hand and eat the seeds.
It may take a few days but as he becomes more trusting, it will happen.
Awesome! He does seem to want to explore my hand, but he's still a little shy. He'll investigate with his beak, just a tiny bit, then go away. He is quite an awesome little fellow. I tried a piece of spray millett last night, but he didn't end up eating it. Maybe we'll try some seeds today.
Hi everyone. Just thought I would give a little update. Myst is still doing well. We've been doing taming exercises everyday. I put my hand in his cage pretty much everytime I go over to say hi. He's not investigating my hand anymore, but he does come close, as in the same perch as my hand. I've tried feeding him some spray millet from my hand, but he doesn't seem interested yet. He's still really chatty with us and everything. I hope things are still going ok with him.
Hi everyone. Here's another update. We've progressed to putting my hand in the cage with him with some Spray Millett. He will nibble it a bit, and then he goes away. I do this with him as often throughout the day as I can. I'm home a lot, so I have a lot of time I can devote just to him. He wont eat out of my palm yet. Is there anything more I should be doing to get him further along in the taming process, or are we on the right track? Is there something else I should be doing? Is there another step I should be moving on to?
Another thing we've started, is we've been doing what I've been calling "listening sessions". He'll perch close to the front of the cage, and get real close and I will repeat some phrases for him. He seems very intent on these sessions. He seems really interested on what I am doing.
Also, in terms of training, how and when do you start with Step Up and Step Down?
