Default Uhoh!

H everyone!

Well, Artoo (my little found/rescued budgie girl) is doing well -- her scaly mites have cleared up, and she's just finishing up a molt (and she's kinda itchyscratchy at the moment). She's been super happy despite the pin feathers.

Over the last 4 days I've noticed that her cere is getting darker. It's much smoother now that the mites have cleared up and at first I thought that the darker color might have been from the natural perch she likes to rub her head on...but looking closer, it seems that her cere is actually changing color.

She's also started throwing food out of her salad dish now and then. It's kind of cute in a way...she chucks some out, then looks down at the bottom of her cage, then over at me....

I'm re-reading the stickies now and especially When We Don't Want Eggs! - Cute Little Birdies Aviary

I'm brand new at birds so I'm a little nervous and want to do the right thing. Aside from the advice in the great article above, is there anything else I should know/be doing?

From what I remember, if they enter breeding condition when you don't want them to, try lowering the amount of "daytime" hours they get. So cover the cage an hour or two earlier than you would normally. This can help simulate fall and therefore trick your bird into coming out of breeding condition. Also if you feed egg food, try cutting down on how often you feed it.

I agree with Emily Also, as long as you're doing everything in the link, it's highly unlikely she will lay any eggs or exhibit breeding or nesting behaviour. Most budgies come in and out of condition several times per year with no other effects, think of it more like a woman's menstural cycle and less like a need to breed

I agree with Star that the link you are referencing gives the best advice.

One of the most important things I would personally stress is that the daylight hours should be limited to no more than 8 hours per day.

I've found there is a difference for my females when they have more than 8 hours. :rolleyes

So, at least for my birds, 8 is now the magic number for daylight.

Does this mean that their cages are only uncovered for 8 hours a day?? (That's not enough time for me to enjoy their company!!)

Only when they are in breeding condition.
