Thumbs down Unsafe Wood Perch

Please do not use this perch for your budgies.

A member of the Talk Budgies Forum purchased this product and their bird had a very bad allergic reaction to it.

The supplier indicated to the member that the wood used was Shima spp Castanea.

Natural Living Y Shaped Perch

The wood from Chestnut trees is not considered to be safe for use with birds.

On the list of Safe woods, it specifically states: NUT TREES - exclude chestnut

Bird; Birds: Safe, Toxic Trees, Woods. Safe Tree Wood. Parrots. Parrot cages.

Castanea (plant)

Polyphenols Isolated From the Bark of Castanea Sativa

Thanks for the heads up on this, Deb. I have looked at these before but declined because the cracks looked like toe traps. I will most definitely not be getting these now, and will ask Lonny to post on his Facebook forums about it too to spread the word. Great thread!

Thanks for asking Lonny to put the information on his social media sites, Kristen.
I had already put it on the Talk Budgies Facebook page and hope those who see it will spread the news.

Thanks for the information. These companies that sell toxic or dangerous products are total losers. How hard it is to use the right wood?

I have a similar perch to this but I got it from a verified parrot website. Its something that may seem very minor but actually something to always keep in mind. It never hurts to double check. It would have been a disaster if that poor birdie chewed on it..

Thanks for the info.
If I remember correctly, I have seen these perches in Walmart.

See if you can cancel the order.
I certainly wouldn't risk using it unless you know exactly what type wood the perch is.
