Default How long did it take you to teach your budgie its first word?

I would love to hear anecdotes about how long it took before you heard your budgie mimic his / her first word?

I've heard some people have heard the first word in 3 weeks...others it might have taken a year... some birds of course never learn to or want to speak and that's cool too.

I'm just curious about the range of experiences. Would love to hear your stories about when this came about for your bird.

Thanks...!

Sweetie was a year when I got him. I think he was speaking clearly within the month, mangled trying up until that point.
Lemon I'm not sure. I didn't expect her to say human words at all and even so she speaks so quietly you really have to listen to her in between her chirps.

Charlie started speaking after about 6 months. so far all he says is 'baby bird', but he it sounds like he is beginning to get "Char-Char Budgie' too.

Indigo started talking at 4 weeks. The earliest you start to teach your budgie to talk the quicker they catch on. I started with an easy word first like pretty boy. Indi says twinkle twinkle little star I'm a little budgerigar. He says I'm in charge. Indi says over 50 different sayings..But the key word to teaching a budgie is patience. But it is so cool when you hear them say there first words.. They have a cute little voice when they talk...

justmoira - that's interesting. I think my budgie is about 6 months.... I've had him for a month... he doesn't seem to be very interested in trying. He will get quiet and turn his head a little bit when I speak with him and try to teach him "pretty bird" ... but he doesn't remain interested for very long. Nor does his chirping sound like he's trying anything that is mimicking.

CharlieBirb - was that after having Charlie for 6 months? Or, when he was 6 months old? How old was he when you got him?

LynandIndigo - Indigo is hilarious. I watched a video of him the other day. So funny. Was Indigo 4 weeks old when he started speaking? Or, after you had him for (4) weeks? How old was he when you brought him home?

Thanks everyone....

Sweetie was a rescue and starved for attention, so I think he was just trying really hard to communicate with me and bond with me. Also I'm a super weirdo who won't stop chattering to my birds literally ALL DAY LONG; I've a siamese cat so I was already used to having conversations with my pets. When I got Lemon I was worried that Sweetie and Lemon would just bond with each other and ignore me, but instead Sweetie showed her I was awesome and it became the three of us. I'm extremely lucky.
Even if your little one never says a human word, he loves you all the same! Just talk to him and sing to him like you would anyway.

Opps i meant to say i bought him home at 4 weeks old and then he started talking after that he picked up the words so quickly. Have you seen the video of him saying I"m in charge. Indigo has a huge personality and is so funny he learns different things all of the time. I am waiting for a video to be cut and it has Indi doing this cool new trick. I have taught him this i sing the song If your happy and you know it Flap you wings and now i have him flapping his wings in the right place. He looks so funny I can't wait to get the video to show you it should be back on the weekend sometime.

Oh wow LynandIndigo..... I can't wait to see your video. Yes, I did watch the video where Indigo was saying he was in charge and I got a kick out of it. Tons of personality. Thanks for clarifying when you brought him home. My guy may never learn to mimic human language and that's ok of course. He's super cute regardless. ....I'm just having a fun time learning all about these clever creatures.

Justmoira . . . thanks for the insights. Your birds are beautiful. . . I just looked at some photos. I do speak a lot to my bird. . .I think he might be getting tired of me. I think I will give him a respite. : ) .... He is super cute and I am ok with whatever he does. He may not learn to mimic and I always realized that. He makes a lot of cute and interesting noises. ... Mostly I just like to learn all about the different behaviors in birds & enjoy learning and watching his. He's such an easy going character. Has made it quite easy on me being a first time owner. He hasn't showed his stubborn side yet, but being a young bird I'm sure he'll have his moments. He's really good. Can be a bit loud at times but that never lasts for long. He takes a long time to wake up. At least 30 minutes. He's a slow riser. It's kind of adorable. I wonder if that's common.

I didn't teach Harry his first words... got him at about 8-9 weeks of age and he already said "hop up" (which the breeder used instead of "step up") I think it was 2-3 weeks after that he was clearly saying things I taught him: "baby baby bird" and "come here" and "Harry" etc.
