It's been a while since I have checked in, but rest assured that Jakob is doing just fine. She's gone through a bit of a transformation over the summer; experiencing being in breeding condition for the first AND second time, and she suddenly looks like a big girl now (her eyes have have a clear grey iris ring!)
Anyway, I've always had a cuttlefish bone in Jakob's cage as well as her play area. When she was a baby she used it as an extra perch, but she's never otherwise used it. Until yesterday, that is. She suddenly went to the cuttlefish bone on her play tree and started pecking at it, and since then she's been back MANY times. I don't know if Jakob actually eats the cuttlefish bone, or whatever she does, but can she get too much of it? Should I limit her access to it?
I love that you have a natural tree as a play stand for Jakob. Do you know what kind of tree it is? And is it alive, or just a branch?
Thanks, Anna Rose! Jakob loves the tree as well
It's a couple of branches tied onto a pot stand. She loves to peck at the wood and de-bark the branches. It's dead wood, so it doesn't last forever, but then she gets a new branch from time to time.
I'm not sure of the exact type of trees. I get the branches from a friend's garden and have checked the trees to ensure they are all on the safe list, so I just try to find something suitable whenever she gets a new branch. I wash and disinfect the branches before she gets them to ensure they are clean.
Welcome back to the forums, Dorte!
It's great to see Jakob doing so well, I sure hope her plucking days are over for good!
Thanks The plucking still happens, but it's only down she plucks now and it doesn't happen often. She got new toys (on the tree and in the cage) specifically designed for feather pluckers, and they are a great distraction for her. It's also proved really good to reintroduce mirrors for her. She has one in the cage and one on her tree. She goes to the mirror in the cage if she gets scared (previously she'd start to "attack" her feathers (the one on her tree is just used to make noise as it has a bell on it).
I've had no luck with a diet change, but who knows. Now that she suddenly decided to peck at the cuttlefish bone, she might do the same with veggies if I'm lucky!
