Moonshine is on a distinguished road
Default Meet Moonshine and Mars!

I inherited a baby budgie from my Vet yesterday. I went in for my dog's yearly checkup, and was offered this little guy whom I've named 'Mars'. The story behind him is tragic. His parents were both killed in an auto accident last weekend. They were long-time friends/neighbors of my Vet, and he took their dogs and budgies to find them homes. I really couldn't take the dogs, as they are very large and I live in a small townhome with my little Mi-Ki. (A small dog recognized by some Kennel Associations as a 'Breed' now. A mix of Japanese Chin, Maltese, and Papillion. Mi-Ki Dog Breed Information and Pictures) So 'Mars' now lives with my new baby budgie 'Moonshine'. They took to each other immediately, and strangely enough, Moonshine has become even more trusting of me and jumps right up on my hand to be fed. (She is only about 5 weeks with me, and has been very shy, and difficult to trust a hand, but is coming around!) We believe they are about the same age, Mars maybe a few weeks older than Moonshine. He is healthy, without mites, etc., so I felt comfortable putting him in with Moonshine right away. I took Moonshine into the Vet's office the same day and the Vet looked at both of them and declared them parasite free, without symptoms of any aviary disease. Normally, he told me a quarantine is necessary, and I should still consider it in case of any disease that may not be showing. But Mars was so depressed looking that I put him in with my girl within hours of bringing him home. He immediately perked up and they began playing and cuddling together. So the story ends well, after all. They will be my pair of budgies! I am honored to be his new Parent.

Meet Moonshine and Mars!

Moonshine and Mars are both absolutely precious!
I'm sure they will become best of friends.

It's great that you were able to adopt little Mars and I'll be looking forward to seeing lots more pictures of the two of them in the days to come.

I believe this budgie is a Recessive Pied? And a Male! I think after my earlier confusion about gender I am getting better at this! Thanks again for your help and guidance. I do have one question; I have been taking them in their cage outside for a few hours every day, and besides the usual predatory animals, should I be careful about anything else, like mosquitos or other wild birds landing on their cage? A finch landed on their cage today. I suppose their bodies and poop could have some nasties that my birds can catch.? Maybe I should put them in a shady windwo instead?

Yes, I agree that from the picture Mars appears to be a recessive pied and male.

There is a risk of your budgies catching a possible illness or getting mites from outdoor birds if/when they land your your budgies' cage. If you are right with them and supervising them, perhaps you can simply shoo any finches or other birds away from the cage before they land on it.

Allowing the budgies to have some time in the fresh air and sunshine (be sure one portion of the cage in is the shade) is good because budgies need sunlight for Vitamin D3.
Birds that are not able to have regular sunlight need to have either a full spectrum light for about an hour a day or should be given a Vitamin D supplement.

That is wonderful that you were able to provide a good home to a budgie in this tragic situation. Mars and Moonshine are both so adorable! I'm glad they are getting along .
