Red face 4 sleeping budgies

I have 4 budgies. Sunshine(female) fluffy(male) Jae(female)pinchy (possibly male). During the day they all play together and everything seems fine, however sometimes it seems like they don't play with pinchy as much... or maybe pinchy doesn't play with them as much, but at night, pinchy sleeps on a different perch, while the others sleep together, I don't understand this because it seems like they usually all get along. Is there budgie bullying going on? Is this normal?

Hi there and to the forums!

Are you sure on your budgies' gender? I'm asking because often, groups of budgies with uneven gender distribution (i.e 3 of one gender and one of another).

Feel free to post pictures of their ceres taken in natural light and we will be able to confirm their gender for you!

Also, is there simply not space for Pinchy? Perhaps he doesn't fit on the perch with them. In a cage with many budgies, you should have multiple food/water bowls and many of the same perches or swings at similar levels of the cage so everybudgie can find a place to perch.

Unless there is actual bickering/fighting going on, I believe the best course of action is to monitor their behaviour and see if Pinchy is excluded a lot and this behaviour isn't just due to a lack of space in the cage. If he is being left out, then perhaps separating the budgies by pairs (2 to a cage) can help them bond better and help everyone feel included.

Keep us posted on how things go!

In the meantime, be sure to read through the forum articles and "stickies" to ensure that you're up to date on the very best of budgie care practices! If you have any questions afterwards, please feel free to ask as we'd love to help

Cheers!

Star has offered you some great tips for finding out the gender.

If you also be a simple case that Pinchy just likes some space when sleeping at night. Some of my birds like to sit together for bed and others like to sit on their own perch or swing- even though they hang out together all day!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

How large is your budgies' cage?
Length x Width x Height

How long have you had them?

As Star and Them have mentioned, some budgies simply prefer to have their own sleeping space.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

Great! The cage is a nice size for your four budgie.

Sunshine and Fluffy are male

Pinchy is a female.

Could you please post a full frontal picture of Jae's cere taken in natural light so I can better determine that one's gender?

Katlyn --

All four of your budgies are adorable.

Jae is a female. Her gender is quite easy to see from the last two pictures you posted.

Since you have two males and two females, please take the time to read the information in these threads:

Best wishes!
