Default First there was 1, then 2, now 3!

Hi guys,

I just wanted to introduce my new budgie Oscar! He is 9 months old and I have had him a week.

I started off with Reggie who I got when he was 8 weeks old. He was with me for 4 months and then I introduced Buster who I got when he was 6 weeks old (he was an early bloomer). I was so worried that Reggie would be lost to me, but he is the perfect little companion who is so loving to me despite having a friend of his own kind. He did stop his amazing talking, but that's a small price to pay for him being happy. We are very bonded.

So, I got the bug again and I really wanted to get another budgie - this time an exhibition budgie - I cannot get more than 3 birds, my other half will leave me! I love the size of show budgies and the funny docile personalities they have. I searched high and low for one but finding babies of the big birds is so hard where I am. I found a breeder of show birds and I asked him for the youngest birds he had. Consequently Oscar is 9 months old but I wasn't put off by his age.

At the breeders I met Oscar and a few others, and by the time I was going to leave (and say no to them all) Oscar was on my finger letting me talk to him. The breeder was very surprised to see this. I had to have him! I am happy to have the challenge of taming an un-tame aviary bird. Oscar is so far doing really well, it's incredible the difference between him and the little pet budgies. He is so calm and aside from a few test bites, doesn't attack at all. He is in the 'new bird' stage where he has decided he likes his cage more than coming out, but we are working on it slowly and I'm happy he is getting used to being caged. He is eating and drinking and enjoys millet. He doesn't seem interested in veggies at all but hopefully when he meets the boys he will copy them and dig in.

If I am honest, I feel terribly guilty for tearing Oscar away from everything he knows just because I wanted him I had a little tear as I drove home at the realisation of how selfish I had been removing him from his home. To make it worse, he is all alone in quarantine too. BUT, I am confident he will have a very happy life with me and the boys. He now has more space to stretch his wings than he has ever had in his life (he is clearly used to being on the floor and is coming around to perching) and his flying and landing is steadily improving. There didn't look to be any room to take off and fly even half a meter in the aviary. His tail is a bit scruffy from being a ground bird but I can already see he is cleaner and better presented.

Anyway, there's his introduction. He's a funny boy, makes a huge mess when he eats, and is a little bit clumsy. When I find him asleep in the evening he is out for the count! Very different to my active pets who never seem to sleep. Fingers crossed his taming continues to go as well as it is so far, I hope he likes me by the time he meets the boys.

Default The Introduction!

Hello everyone!! So sorry in advance for the LONG post! You can skip to the end if you like

I just wanted to show you how things are going with my 3 boys. I introduced them on Monday after Oscar had been in quarantine for 32 days. I wanted to go longer with him but I really needed to consider his mental health as well. He appeared to be healthy, eating and drinking well, healthy poo's, good flying, preening nicely etc etc. However, quarantine in the spare room all alone was making him show signs of depression and frustration, often pacing back and forth on his perch or repeatedly hopping from one to the other in a sequence. He had come from a packed aviary to a life of solitude. I strongly encourage quarantine to my Instagram followers however many of them get put off in the first few days because of the boredom - I hope they never regret their lack of patience!

Anyway! So Monday, I brought Oscar into the living room and put his cage next to Reggie and Busters. Instant attraction haha. Reggie is so incredibly friendly, he flung himself to the side of the cage (as he did with Buster) and literally could not contain his excitement. He hopped around the cage over and over chirping away with his little puffed up head. Poor Buster often got mini attacks from Reggie because he appeared to be so excited. I left them for a few hours like this to chat to each other. Little Buster appeared to be a little stressed, breathing quite heavily sitting at the back of the cage. It seemed he wanted comfort from Reggie, his brother and friend, only instead he was completely shunned .

I knew Reggie and Buster would welcome Oscar happily, and Oscar is a gentle giant, so I let them all out together. Reggie is such a tart, he genuinely loves everyone - budgie or human - he ever meets (he has previously met my friends budgie and they were best friends in 5 minutes) He was the happiest, hoppiest curtest birdy at the party. Oscar was so chilled out, these exhibition budgies crack me up! He must have wondered what on earth Reggie was doing. Buster didn't have quite as much fun as the others, whilst Reggie welcomes anyone he meets into the gang, its often not so much fun for Buster. I really believe that Reggie just got too excited and wanted to keep the newbie all to himself, so I had to intervene a few times and ensure that Buster was placed with them without Reggie shooing him off. Reggie did exactly the same with my friends budgie, he would chase Buster off, but when I returned after my holiday to pick them up, Buster was the one playing with the other budgie and Reggie was back to wanting human interaction. I just love how they all have such different personalities!

Yesterday I sadly couldn't get them out at all as I was out all day, but they would have had all day to chat to each other and get to know one another. This afternoon it will be full on play time - I'm hoping my boys will show Oscar how to eat his vegetables too.

It went as i expected, and all three seem happy. Reggie came to me for kisses and comfort (He puts his head under my nose and closes his eyes), he really is so bonded to humans its amazing.

I've attached some photos of all three.

Congratulations on your new addition to your family. Oscar Is beautiful he looks like a big bird compared to your other two budgies. I am sure Oscar will fit in well and become good friends... In the first set of photos I like the last photo it looks like they are fighting over who is going to become friends with Oscar first. The one with the mobile phone.. Is Oscar an English budgie.
